For the first time in her life, Cheryl is taking psychiatric medication for her constant crying, sleeplessness, and anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>Cheryl feels she\u2019s at odds with everyone: Eva, family members, friends, schools, doctors, therapists, politicians, the media, and the culture. On how many fronts can one person fight?<\/p>\n<p>I was not surprised when Cheryl told me, \u201cSometimes I wish my daughter had cancer. (AP Photo\/Mark Humphrey, File)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe mental health profession was hijacked a long, long time ago by radical agendas,\u201d Grossman told Breitbart News. \u201cAnd this is one of them. It has just exploded, and it\u2019s an epidemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA mother whose daughter was in a residential treatment center for depression, cutting and trying to hang herself, told me one-third of the kids in residential treatment identify as non-binary or trans,\u201d she said. \u201cNow, mind you, this is a diagnosis. I mean, non-binary didn\u2019t even exist at the time that I was training to be a psychiatrist. We never dreamt we would see one case in our whole life of a transgender individual. That\u2019s how rare it was. It was something that you read about or maybe heard about on the news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grossman observed transgender individuals such as Christine Jorgensen and Ren\u00e9e Richards were men well into adulthood at the time of transition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a whole totally different thing than having a little 12-year-old tell you that she\u2019s a boy, and having to affirm her immediately,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, I would say it\u2019s no longer that we\u2019re approaching the edge of a cliff; we\u2019ve gone over the edge of that cliff already, and now we\u2019re just in a freefall. And I don\u2019t know how this thing is going to end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As just one example of the \u201cfreefall\u201d Grossman sees happening when it comes to gender ideology, the psychiatrist described how elective double mastectomies can now be required to be covered by health insurers in California.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIf you are a transgender individual who has breasts, the way that the insurance in California will refer to your breasts, when you want them removed, is they will call them \u2018abnormal structures of the body caused by congenital defects,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>As Grossman cited, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/01\/05\/california-official-insurance-must-cover-double-mastectomies-for-young-girls-with-gender-dysphoria\/\">issued<\/a> an order in late December 2020 that requires insurance companies to cover a minor girl\u2019s elective double mastectomy as part of her \u201ctransition.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Lara&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.insurance.ca.gov\/0400-news\/0100-press-releases\/2020\/release140-2020.cfm\">said<\/a> in a statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p>For far too long, individuals diagnosed with gender dysphoria have had to battle a host of challenges to get access to gender-affirming care in order to be their true selves. Social stigma, misconceptions about gender dysphoria and its treatment, and outdated medical criteria create barriers to necessary medical care that can lead to tragic results for individuals with gender dysphoria, especially for our transgender youth.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Lara cited Kenneth B. Schnoll, general counsel and deputy insurance commissioner, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurance.ca.gov\/0250-insurers\/0300-insurers\/0200-bulletins\/bulletin-notices-commiss-opinion\/upload\/Gender-dysphoria-male-chest-surgery-CDI-GC-opinion-letter-12-30-20.pdf\">wrote<\/a> in response to an inquiry from Trans Family Support Services regarding denials of coverage for elective mastectomy for minor girls:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"21\">\n<p>An insurer may not deny coverage for male chest reconstruction surgery for female-to-male patients undergoing treatment for gender dysphoria, based solely on a patient\u2019s inability to meet a minimum age threshold because insurers must consider a patient\u2019s specific clinical situation to determine actual medical necessity based on evidence-based standards of care.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Insurance Code section 10123.88 requires all health insurance policies to cover reconstructive surgery necessary to \u201cimprove function\u201d or \u201ccreate a normal appearance, to the extent possible.\u201d Reconstructive surgery is defined as \u201csurgery performed to correct or repair abnormal structures of the body caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors, or disease to do either of the following: (A) To improve function. (B) To create a normal appearance, to the extent possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cSo, it\u2019s just a total departure from reality,\u201d Grossman asserted. \u201cAnd that\u2019s what my colleagues in the mental health profession are doing. Instead of representing reality and encouraging children and adolescents to live in reality \u2014 because that\u2019s what emotionally healthy people do, they live in reality, even when it\u2019s a very painful reality \u2014 but in this case, we\u2019re basically telling kids that biology isn\u2019t important, that it\u2019s only what you think that\u2019s important. (Elaine Thompson\/Associated Press)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Asked what she tells parents when they come to see her about their child who claims to identify as another gender, Grossman explained there is likely some reason the child or teen could be \u201crunning to a new identity, and that we have to figure out what that reason is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it a girl who was abused and feels that, if she\u2019s a boy, she\u2019ll never be abused?\u201d she suggested. \u201cIs it that her body\u2019s changing and she doesn\u2019t like the attention that she\u2019s getting for her developing body? Has she been raised in an environment that leads her to believe that being a woman in this day and age is such a horrible thing and that she just thinks it\u2019s impossibly difficult to be a woman?
