Nigeria\u2019s Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) issued a statement on December 6 <a href=\"https:\/\/humanglemedia.com\/nigerias-financial-intelligence-unit-disputes-report-on-terror-financing\/\">dismissing<\/a> GIABA\u2019s allegations as \u201cuntrue.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The group\u2019s report is \u201ctotally outdated and was based on a 2019 country evaluation report which is stale and irrelevant today,\u201d NFIU Chief Media Analyst Ahmed Dikko said on Monday. Dikko claimed the Nigerian government\u2019s counterterrorism financing efforts have evolved since 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe funding of violence from all sections of the country is being analyzed and reported to all relevant authorities according to law,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria\u2019s Central Bank oversees the NFIU, which serves as the central coordinating body for Nigeria\u2019s \u201cAnti-Money Laundering, Counter-Terrorist Financing and Counter-Proliferation Financing activities,\u201d according to the Abuja-based news site HumAngle.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.5227272727273\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Nigeria\u2019s Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) on Monday disputed a report published by ECOWAS alleging the movement of billions of naira in terror funding through the country\u2019s financial system.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8wIgtJrdJG\">https:\/\/t.co\/8wIgtJrdJG<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 HumAngle_ (@HumAngle_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HumAngle_\/status\/1467857860008853506?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 6, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) \u2014 a regional political and economic bloc \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.giaba.org\/about-giaba\/index_656.html\">established<\/a> GIABA to help ECOWAS member states prevent and control money laundering and terrorist financing in the region. ECOWAS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowas.int\/about-ecowas\/\">consists<\/a> of 15 member states including Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Boko Haram is a jihadist terror group that emerged in northeastern Nigeria in 2009 and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/africa\/2021\/11\/24\/boko-haram-takes-unicef-worker-hostage\/\">waged<\/a> an Islamist insurgency across the region in the decade-plus since then.&nbsp;The group aims to establish an Islamic caliphate in West Africa and has expanded its reach beyond northeastern Nigeria to the neighboring Lake Chad region accordingly, specifically to&nbsp;Chad, Cameroon, and Niger. Boko Haram\u2019s insurgency has killed roughly 350,000 residents of the Lake Chad region since 2009 and displaced an additional three million people. (AP Photo)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Boko Haram <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2015\/04\/27\/islamic-state-in-west-africa-boko-haram-rebrands\/\">renamed<\/a> itself ISWAP in 2015 and pledged allegiance to now-dead ISIS \u201ccaliph\u201d Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The Nigerian government has repeatedly claimed that the two are separate organizations and that the current iteration of Boko Haram is as a group of jihadists who disagreed with the decision to become an affiliate of the Islamic State. Abuja has also repeatedly claimed to have defeated Boko Haram and justified the claim by blaming Sunni jihadist attacks in Boko Haram\u2019s home state of Borno on \u201cISWAP\u201d as a separate entity.<\/p>\n<p>Boko Haram allegedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/africa\/2021\/06\/17\/report-boko-haram-confirms-leader-abubakar-shekaus-death\/\">confirmed<\/a> the death of its leader, Abubakar Shekau, in June.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>ISWAP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/nigerian-army-general-troops-killed-iswap-attack-2021-11-13\/\">killed<\/a> four members of the Nigerian Army, including an officer, after the terror group attacked the Borno State town of Askira \u201cwith at least 12 gun trucks, burning houses, shops and a school and forcing some residents to flee,\u201d according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>The Nigeran Army sent troops to Askira in an attempt to defend the town but ultimately failed to curtail the attack. Nigeria\u2019s military suffered casualties during the operation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadly, a gallant senior officer Brigadier General Dzarma Zirkusu and three soldiers paid the supreme sacrifice \u2026 as they provided reinforcement in a counter offensive against the terrorists,\u201d Nigerian Army spokesman Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu said in a statement issued November 13.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecurity sources said ISWAP fighters had also separately attacked troops near Maiduguri town, but there were no immediate details on casualties,\u201d Reuters revealed on November 14.
