The U.S. would also need to invest $3.4 trillion in transmission line expansions, including lines connecting new solar and wind energy generation to the grid, the study concluded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current power grid took 150 years to build. Now, to get to net-zero emissions by 2050, we must build that amount of transmission again in the next 15 years and then build that much more again in the 15 years after that,\u201d Jesse Jenkins, a Princeton researcher and co-author of the study, said, E&amp;E News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eenews.net\/articles\/offshore-wind-grid-woes-may-be-worse-than-previously-thought\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since Biden took office, he has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/04\/22\/fact-sheet-president-biden-sets-2030-greenhouse-gas-pollution-reduction-target-aimed-at-creating-good-paying-union-jobs-and-securing-u-s-leadership-on-clean-energy-technologies\/\">pledged<\/a> to cut U.S. emissions 50% by 2030, have a 100% carbon-free grid by 2035 and have the economy reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. As part of the president\u2019s clean energy agenda, the Department of the Interior <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/13\/joe-biden-interior-department-wind-farm-renewable-energy\/\">unveiled plans<\/a> to fund up to seven offshore wind farms nationwide with a total capacity of 30 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 in October.<\/p>\n<p>However, the 30 GW of power proposal falls far short of the 300 GW that offshore wind farms on the East Coast would need to produce to achieve net-zero, Tufts University environmental engineering expert Eric Hines said, according to E&amp;E News. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/01\/nuclear-energy-joe-manchin-john-barrasso\/\">(RELATED: \u2018Cannot Power The World With Solar Panels And Wind Turbines Alone\u2019: Bipartisan Lawmakers Advocate For Increased Nuclear Energy)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we get beyond that first 30 GW, we are really going to have our hands tied as an industry,\u201d Avangrid Renewables president Bill White said during a recent conference, E&amp;E News reported.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7332046\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"35\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7332046\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President Joe Biden looks at a wind turbine blade as he tours the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Arvada, Colorado, on Sept. 14. (Brendan Smialowski\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Oregon-based Avangrid is a major developer of renewable energy technology that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vineyardwind.com\/partners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">owns a 50% stake<\/a> in a wind project off the coast of Massachusetts. The project, which is under construction and is on pace to be the first of its kind in the U.S., will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vineyardwind.com\/vineyardwind-1\">consist of 62 wind turbines<\/a> and generate 800 megawatts per year.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, there are just 14 offshore projects in development along the East Coast, E&amp;E News reported. While the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) continues to coordinate with a number of states on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boem.gov\/renewable-energy\/state-activities\">several projects<\/a>, the agency has noted that the U.S. will need more wind projection to reach its energy goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will indeed need more capacity,\u201d BOEM\u2019s head of renewable energy, James Bennet, said, according to E&amp;E News.<\/p>\n<p>Wind and solar generation, though, have been <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/15\/joe-biden-interior-department-deb-haaland-europe-energy-wind\/\">criticized for being unreliable<\/a> sources of energy since they almost never produce the amount of power they are capable of. Offshore wind, for example, produces just 45% of its energy capacity because of its intermittent production capability, Energy Information Administration data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/aeo\/pdf\/electricity_generation.pdf#page=7\">showed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve supplanted geographically-specific policies for a general policy that wind and solar are generally good and fossil fuel is bad,\u201d American Institute for Economic Research senior faculty Ryan Yonk previously told the Daily Caller News Foundation. \u201cAnd that puts the ability to consistently produce energy at a reasonable price in jeopardy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
