The patient and his or her family members are required to drop everything and quarantine. They must inform all of those with whom they\u2019ve had recent contact, some of whom may be forced to quarantine as well.<\/p>\n<p>When one considers the large numbers of Americans testing positive every day, many of whom are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/rare-people-without-symptoms-spread-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">asymptomatic<\/a>, the question becomes whether all of this trouble is really necessary.<\/p>\n<p>People also question the accuracy of the test results. A couple of weeks ago, CNBC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/11\/13\/musk-says-took-four-covid-19-tests-two-were-positive-two-negative.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>\u00a0that Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, took four COVID-19 tests on one day. Two came back positive and two were negative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-extras trending\"><strong>TRENDING:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/soros-open-society-foundation-president-steps-paving-way-potential-biden-admin-job\/\" data-type=\"Internal link\" data-type-location=\"in-content-trending\">Soros&#8217; Open Society Foundation President Steps Down, Paving the Way for Potential Biden Admin Job<\/a><\/p>\n<p>An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medical.mit.edu\/covid-19-updates\/2020\/11\/pcr-test-result\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article from MIT Medical<\/a>\u00a0tells us there is no such thing as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/covid-test-lab-error-causes-college-football-game-canceled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">false positive<\/a>. If an individual receives a positive result on a COVID-19 test, \u201cwe can be sure that it has correctly detected genetic material from the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the virus that causes COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The polymerase chain reaction test is the nasal swab with which many of us are familiar. According to MIT Medical, the PCR test \u201canalyzes samples by amplifying viral RNA in cycles. Most tests \u2026 use a 40-cycle protocol. If the virus isn\u2019t detected within 40 amplification cycles, the test result is negative. If viral RNA is detected in 40 cycles or less, the PCR machine stops running, and the test is positive. Because you received a positive result, we know that the test detected the virus in your sample by the time it reached its 40-cycle limit.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"IC1-ad\" class=\"sponsor IC1\"><\/div>\n<p>However, \u201cthis binary way of viewing test results \u2014 positive\/negative, infected\/not infected\u201d \u2014 tells us nothing about the size of an individual\u2019s \u201cviral load.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter all,\u201d MIT Medical said, \u201cthe amount of virus in a sample is directly correlated with the number of amplification cycles needed to detect it, a number known as its cycle threshold (CT). A positive test that comes back positive in 20 cycles contains a greater amount of virus than one requiring 40 cycles. Right now, we just call both results \u2018positive.\u2019 But it\u2019s obvious that the first sample came from an individual with a higher viral load. And the greater the viral load, the more contagious the patient is likely to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\" class=\"one-half\">\n<div id=\"pollFormBox\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In other words, an individual might have been exposed to a small amount of the disease and his or her immune system is fighting it. It will soon be gone.
