(Photo by Sean Rayford\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5>OAN Newsroom<br \/>UPDATED 2:40 PM PT \u2013 Saturday, December 4, 2021<\/h5>\n<p>A former National Security advisor said she leaked government information as a way to serve the American people.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview that aired Friday, former NSA contractor Reality Winner said her decision of releasing information on the alleged Russian government hacking of the 2016 election was out of love for this country. She defended her actions, saying she felt people were being misled despite being charged with espionage by the Justice Department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew it was secret, but I also knew that I had pledged service to the American people. And at that point in time, it felt like they were being led astray,\u201d said Winner.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Reality Winner, in her first television interview since her release from prison, says she leaked classified material to serve the American people. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5R5uAV8q5g\">https:\/\/t.co\/5R5uAV8q5g<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ExalQ3Zsxd\">pic.twitter.com\/ExalQ3Zsxd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 60 Minutes (@60Minutes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/60Minutes\/status\/1466753352713351177?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 3, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After the information was leaked, another agency within the federal government was reportedly notifying states about potential hacking threats.
