Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) denounced the Biden administration\u2019s refusal to \u201ccancel\u201d student debt.<\/p>\n<p>Since President Joe Biden took office, progressive lawmakers have been pressuring him into forgiving federal student loans. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) \u2014 joined by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/citing-racial-inequality-schumer-asks-biden-to-flick-his-pen-and-cancel-50000-in-student-debt\">said<\/a> in July that \u201call President Biden has to do is flick his pen\u201d and cancel $50,000 of obligations for each borrower.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, other Democrats \u2014 including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/this-cpac-footage-is-nuts-progressives-blast-pelosi-for-saying-student-debt-forgiveness-is-a-bad-idea\">question<\/a> the premise that student loan forgiveness is a beneficial policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuppose,\u201d she said in response to Schumer\u2019s argument, \u201cyour child at this time does not want to go to college, but you\u2019re paying taxes to forgive someone else\u2019s obligation. You may not be happy about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As recorded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/politics\/aoc-biden-cancel-student-loan-debt-ridiculous\">Fox Business<\/a>, Ocasio-Cortez implored Biden to reconsider student debt forgiveness \u2014 which, according to the White House, requires an act of Congress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s teenagers signing up for what is often hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt. We just do that. Our government allows that,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez argued. \u201cWe give 17-year-olds the ability to sign on and sign up for $100,000 worth of debt and we think that\u2019s responsible policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m greatly looking forward to the Biden administration canceling student loan debt and no longer advancing the false narratives that student loan debt is for the privileged,\u201d she added. \u201cWhat a ridiculous assertion. Do we really think that a billionaire\u2019s child is taking student loans?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though Biden has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-pauses-student-loan-repayment-until-2022\">refused<\/a> to unilaterally forgive student debt, he extended the moratorium on payments for Department of Education loans until 2022 following pressure from the progressive faction of his party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will give the Department of Education and borrowers more time and more certainty as they prepare to restart student loan payments,\u201d the White House said. \u201cIt will also ensure a smoother transition that minimizes loan defaults and delinquencies that hurt families and undermine our economic recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Warren, however, said that delaying student debt is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/warren-says-that-canceling-50000-in-student-loans-is-a-racial-justice-issue\">insufficient<\/a> \u2014 calling debt forgiveness an \u201ceconomic justice issue\u201d and a \u201cracial justice issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President does have the power to cancel student loan debt,\u201d she told CNN anchor Don Lemon. \u201cAnd you know how I know that? Because President Obama did it, President Trump did it, and President Biden has already done it. President Obama did it for several million people. President Trump did it when he said \u2018For all 43 million people without standing student loan debt, I forgive your interest and you can spend payments.\u2019 That\u2019s canceling your interest \u2014 not delay it, cancel it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd President Biden has done both of those things,\u201d she continued. \u201cSo Presidents have the power, they have used the power \u2014 I just want to see him use that power to cancel $50,000 in student loan debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfrican-Americans borrow more money to go to school, more money while they\u2019re in school, and have a harder time paying it off when they get out of school,\u201d Warren noted. \u201cCanceling $50,000 of student loan debt would help close the black-white wealth gap for people with student loan debt by twenty-five points.
