As the officer investigated a dispute, a male suspect produced a firearm \u2014 prompting a shootout. The officer was struck twice and later died. The unidentified suspect was shot once and remains in critical condition.<\/p>\n<p>The incident occurred on Friday at 1:40 p.m. at the 1500 block of South Belt Line Road. As of press time, the officer has not been formally identified. During a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BOeo2kV60Mw\">press conference<\/a> posted by <em>The Dallas Morning News<\/em>, Mesquite Police Chief David Gill described the events leading up to the officer\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis was a senseless act of violence that ripped a loving father and husband from his family. He was a 21-year veteran of the Mesquite Police Department,\u201d Gill told reporters.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Gill went on to say the officer was \u201ca good man, good friend, and good officer\u201d in the emotional statement he provided on Friday evening. The incident is currently under investigation and charges have not been announced.<\/p>\n<p>Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement offering condolences. \u201cOur hearts are with the family and loved ones of the Mesquite Police Department officer who passed away this evening,\u201d Abbott said.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/author\/randy-clark\/\"><em><br \/>Randy Clark<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;is a 32-year veteran of the United States Border Patrol.&nbsp; Prior to his retirement, he served as the Division Chief for Law Enforcement Operations, directing operations for nine Border Patrol Stations within the Del Rio, Texas, Sector.
