The national election commission&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/mena\/2021\/11\/24\/saif-al-islam-qaddafi-disqualified-from-libyas-presidential-race\/\"><span>disqualified<\/span><\/a><span>&nbsp;him on November 24 because he was convicted in absentia of war crimes in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When Qaddafi\u2019s lawyers sought to file an appeal against his disqualification, they found the courthouse they were required to use in the city of Sebha had been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/africa\/2021\/11\/26\/armed-gunmen-help-ban-qaddafi-son-libya-presidential-election\/\"><span>overrun<\/span><\/a><span> by gunmen loyal to military strongman Khalifa Haftar, one of Qaddafi\u2019s prospective opponents. Haftar\u2019s military organization, the Libyan National Army (LNA), claimed the gunmen were merely there to protect the courthouse.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"5.8181818181818\">\n<p lang=\"fr\" dir=\"ltr\">Libya Court Reinstates Gadhafi Presidential Bid Amid Election Chaos<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5Gl6ELuru0\">https:\/\/t.co\/5Gl6ELuru0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Voice of America (@VOANews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VOANews\/status\/1466693701573300224?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 3, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>The court in Sebha is once again functional, and on Thursday it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/libya-court-reinstates-gaddafi-presidential-bid-amid-election-chaos-\/6336813.html\"><span>overrode<\/span><\/a><span> the election commission and ruled Qaddafi eligible to run for president, prompting his supporters to dance in the streets of the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The International Criminal Court (ICC) has also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icc-cpi.int\/libya\/gaddafi\"><span>charged<\/span><\/a><span> Qaddafi with two counts of crimes against humanity for actions he took to support his father\u2019s crumbling regime in 2011. (Libyan High National Elections Commission via AP)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Anas El Gomati of the Tripoli-based Sadeq Institute told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/12\/2\/libya-court-reinstates-gaddafis-son-as-presidential-candidate\"><span>Al Jazeera News<\/span><\/a><span> on Thursday the court-ordered reinstatement of Qaddafi, and several other disqualified candidates, would diminish the already low level of public trust in the election.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI think it is going to puzzle many Libyans today who have protested the candidacy of individuals like Saif al-Islam Gaddafi and Khalifa Haftar but who are now on the ballot box,\u201d Gomati said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s a major plot twist but it\u2019s not the last one.
