The order will affect \u201croughly 930 schools and 56,000 employees, city officials,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/02\/nyregion\/nyc-vaccine-mandate-private-schools.html?smtyp=cur&amp;smid=fb-nytimes\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re doing everything in our power to protect our students and school staff, and a mandate for nonpublic school employees will help keep our school communities and youngest New Yorkers safe,\u201d Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>While public school and education employees are required to be fully vaccinated, the city has resisted implementing a vaccine mandate for students, unlike the city of Los Angeles, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/09\/16\/los-angeles-schools-children-12-512213\">requires vaccinations<\/a> for students 12 &amp; up. Los Angeles has not yet mandated the vaccine for children ages 5 to 11.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cCalifornia was the&nbsp;<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/11\/us\/california-teachers-vaccine-mandate.html\">first state to issue a vaccine mandate for all teachers<\/a>, covering public and private schools, but allowed a weekly testing option,\u201d noted the <em>Times.<\/em> \u201cWashington followed days later;&nbsp;<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title href=\"https:\/\/www.k12.wa.us\/sites\/default\/files\/public\/communications\/2021docs\/FAQ-COVID-19-Vaccine-Requirement-for-K-12-School-Employees.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">its mandate<\/a>&nbsp;offered no testing option, but allowed for religious or medical exemptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Jewish and Catholic leaders voiced concern over the mandate, arguing it infringes on their right to a religious exemption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cThe practical impact of the city imposing an immunization mandate could be devastating to our schools and the children they serve,\u201d Rabbi David Zwiebel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theyeshivaworld.com\/news\/general\/2037431\/rabbi-zwiebel-responds-to-nyc-vaax-mandate-could-be-devastating-to-our-schools-and-the-children-they-serve.html\">wrote in a letter<\/a> that was also signed by&nbsp;Dr. Thomas Chadzutko, the superintendent of the Diocese of Brooklyn\u2019s schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cThe reality is that the small percentage of school employees who have chosen not to vaccinate have made a personal choice based on their individual circumstances and personal values,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Echoing arguments from the city\u2019s police and firefighters unions, the letter warned that a vaccine mandate could lead to the firing of qualified teachers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cAs a result, the school will have to hire new qualified teachers and other staff to fill the newly created vacancies,\u201d the letter continues. \u201cIn an era when finding high-quality teachers and staff is so difficult even at the beginning of the school year finding high quality replacement staff in the middle of the school year may be impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The city of New York currently has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/lifestyle\/health\/coronavirus\/crunching-the-covid-19-numbers-nyc-worker-vaccine-rates-keep-ticking-upward-as-virus-spread-falls-further\/\">vaccination rate<\/a> upward of 70 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">While New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan has expressed support for the vaccines, he <a href=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/news\/coronavirus\/nyc-houses-of-worship-host-weekend-of-faith-to-promote-vaccinations\/\">commended<\/a> Mayor Bill de Blasio in August for not implementing a vaccine mandate, allowing the church to encourage employees to be vaccinated of their own free will. At the time, unvaccinated teachers were required to submit weekly negative tests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cWe can\u2019t jeopardize the health of the kids,\u201d Dolan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The Catholic Church has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2021\/10\/21\/catholic-churchs-embrace-coronavirus-vaccines-is-consistent-with-past-practice\/\">endorsed<\/a> the coronavirus vaccine as a necessary remedy to combat the pandemic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not even the Catholic schools are free in New York City, where the government has just ordered a vaccine mandate for religious and private school employees.
