A prosecutor says they gave their son access to a gun and didn\u2019t intervene despite problems at school that day.<\/p>\n<p>Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard says an attorney for the Crumbleys hasn\u2019t been able to reach them.<\/p>\n<p>The couple\u2019s attorneys,&nbsp;Smith and&nbsp;Mariell Lehman, released a statement to the <em>Detroit Free Press<\/em> claiming that the couple is not in fact on the run and will be returning to the area. The statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/oakland\/2021\/12\/03\/james-crumbley-jennifer-crumbley-search-oxford-high-school-shooting\/8856414002\/\">reads<\/a>:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p>On Thursday night we contacted the Oakland County prosecutor to discuss this matter and to advise her that James and Jennifer Crumbley would be turning themselves in to be arraigned. Instead of communicating with us, the prosecutor held a press conference to announce charges.<\/p>\n<p>The Crumbleys left town on the night of the tragic shooting for their own safety. They are returning to the area to be arraigned. They are not fleeing from law enforcement despite recent comments in media reports.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, the Oakland Sheriff\u2019s office seems to dispute this timeline. The <em>Detroit News<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/local\/oakland-county\/2021\/12\/03\/oakland-county-fugitive-team-searching-parents-jennifer-james-crumbley-oxford-high-suspect\/8855814002\/\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"19\">\n<p>\u201cTheir attorney had assured us that if a decision was made to charge them, she would produce them for arrest,\u201d [county Undersheriff Mike] McCabe said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>That agreement with attorney Smith was sometime in the morning, McCabe said around 2 p.m. Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur last conversation with the attorney was that she had been trying to reach them by phone and text, and they were not responding,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>McCabe said Fugitive Apprehension Team officers were out searching for the couple as of mid-afternoon Friday.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On Friday, Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald filed involuntary manslaughter charges Friday against the Crumbleys, saying they failed to intervene on the day of the tragedy despite being confronted with a drawing and chilling message \u2014 \u201cblood everywhere\u201d \u2014 that was found at their son\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n<p>James and Jennifer Crumbley committed \u201cegregious\u201d acts, from buying a gun on Black Friday and making it available to Ethan Crumbley to resisting his removal from school when they were summoned a few hours before the shooting, Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expect parents and everyone to have humanity and to step in and stop a potential tragedy,\u201d she said. \u201cThe conclusion I draw is that there was absolute reason to believe this individual was dangerous and disturbed.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19000306\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" readability=\"40\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19000306\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/AP21337650847465.jpg\" alt width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald addresses the media in her office on December 3, 2021, in Pontiac, Michigan. (AP Photo\/Carlos Osorio)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>McDonald offered the most precise account so far, three days after four students were killed and others were wounded at Oxford High School, roughly 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Detroit.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Ethan Crumbley, 15, emerged from a bathroom with a gun, shooting students in the hallway, investigators said. He\u2019s charged <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/shootings-michigan-4e1a14622ed8c5a6bcc7e8da88e3c33d\">as an adult with murder, terrorism<\/a> and other crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Under Michigan law, the involuntary manslaughter charge filed against the parents can be pursued if authorities believe someone contributed to a situation where there was a high chance of harm or death.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Parents in the U.S. are rarely charged in school shootings involving their children, even as most minors get guns from a parent or relative\u2019s house, according to experts.<\/p>\n<p>The couple\u2019s court appearance was pending. It wasn\u2019t immediately known if they had attorneys who could comment.<\/p>\n<p>School officials became concerned about the younger Crumbley on Monday, a day before the shooting, when a teacher saw him searching for ammunition on his phone, McDonald said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Jennifer Crumbley was contacted and subsequently told her son in a text message: \u201cLol. I\u2019m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught,\u201d according to the prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, a teacher found a note on Ethan\u2019s desk and took a photo. It was a drawing of a gun pointing at the words, \u201cThe thoughts won\u2019t stop. Help me,\u201d McDonald said.<\/p>\n<p>There also was a drawing of a bullet, she said, with words above it: \u201cBlood everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Between the gun and the bullet was a person who appeared to have been shot twice and is bleeding. He also wrote, \u201cMy life is useless\u201d and \u201cThe world is dead,\u201d according to the prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p>The school quickly had a meeting with Ethan and his parents, who were told to get him into counseling within 48 hours, McDonald said.<\/p>\n<p>The Crumbleys failed to ask their son about the gun or check his backpack, McDonald said. The teen returned to class and the shooting subsequently occurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe notion that a parent could read those words and also know that their son had access to a deadly weapon that they gave him is unconscionable \u2014 it\u2019s criminal,\u201d the prosecutor said.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Crumbley texted her son after the shooting, saying, \u201cEthan, don\u2019t do it,\u201d McDonald said.<\/p>\n<p>James Crumbley called 911 to say that a gun was missing from their home and that Ethan might be the shooter. (AP Photo\/Paul Sancya)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2wHd8nN4tXw\">video message<\/a> to the community Thursday, the head of Oxford Community Schools said the high school looks like a \u201cwar zone\u201d and won\u2019t be ready for weeks. Superintendent Tim Throne repeatedly complimented students and staff for how they responded to the violence.<\/p>\n<p>He also acknowledged the meeting of Crumbley, the parents and school officials. Throne offered no details but summed it up by saying, \u201cNo discipline was warranted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McDonald was asked about the decision to keep Crumbley in school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, he shouldn\u2019t have gone back to that classroom. \u2026 I believe that is a universal position.
