Methane emissions, which are a particularly potent greenhouse gas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ghgemissions\/overview-greenhouse-gases\">account for<\/a> 10% of total U.S. emissions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States cannot achieve its targeted reduction in methane emissions under the Global Methane Pledge without a swift and large-scale decline in oil and gas sector methane leaks,\u201d Johnson wrote in the <a href=\"https:\/\/science.house.gov\/letters-to-permian-basin-oil-and-gas-companies-seeking-methane-emission-data\">letters<\/a> sent on Thursday. \u201cThe existence of these leaks, as well as continued uncertainty regarding their size, duration, and frequency, threatens America\u2019s ability to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Committee on Science, Space, and Technology is investigating whether existing LDAR programs possess the capabilities to achieve wide-ranging, quantifiable emission reductions from oil and gas sector methane leaks, and whether additional policies and research may be required to support a stronger Federal role in monitoring, quantifying, and evaluating methane leak emissions,\u201d she continued. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/28\/katie-porter-climate-change-oil-gas-house-oversight-committee\/\">(RELATED: Congresswoman Stands Near Her Gas-Powered Minivan While Using Candy, Rice To Prove Oil Companies Are Bad)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden\u2019s administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/09\/18\/joint-us-eu-press-release-on-the-global-methane-pledge\/\">joined<\/a> the Global Methane Pledge alongside several Western nations in September, agreeing to cut methane 30% by 2030. However, China, Russia and India, which are the world\u2019s top methane emitters, opted against joining the agreement, putting the U.S. at an economic disadvantage, critics <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/11\/united-states-european-union-methane-emissions-climate-change-china-russia-india\/\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7331495\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"33\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7331495\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rep. (Paul Ellis\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>During the United Nations climate change conference in November, the Environmental Protection Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/02\/joe-biden-environmental-protection-agency-methane-emissions-oil-gas-industry\/\">unveiled<\/a> regulations that it said would cut methane emissions by 41 million tons.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have also <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/16\/green-new-deal-handouts-subsidies-democrats-joe-biden-budget-energy-climate-change\/\">included a methane fee<\/a> that would fine companies that emit over a pre-determined limit in their massive budget bill making its way through Congress. The measure has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipaa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/091321-Letter-to-Congress-on-Methane-Fees.pdf\">strongly opposed<\/a> by industry groups representing domestic natural gas providers.<\/p>\n<p>In the letters Thursday, Johnson requested the companies\u2019 \u201cscientific, technological, and analytical frameworks\u201d underpinning their LDAR programs. Chevron, ConocoPhillips and ExxonMobil were among the companies that received a letter from the chairwoman.<\/p>\n<p>The three firms didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>In October, Reps. Carolyn Maloney and Ro Khanna, the top Democrats on the House Oversight Committee, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/27\/democrats-ro-khanna-carolyn-maloney-oversight-committee-big-oil-disinformation\/\">opened<\/a> a separate probe into the fossil fuel industry\u2019s alleged \u201cdisinformation\u201d campaign on climate change dating back decades. Maloney, the committee\u2019s chair, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/03\/house-oversight-democrats-carolyn-maloney-subpoena-big-oil-disinformation\/\">said<\/a> she would subpoena several oil and gas corporations for additional information after a hearing held as part of the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe received the subpoena.
