The order to evacuate Horizon West Condominium Building was by Fire Chief Steve Howard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One officer who aided in the evacuation noted that they took action to \u201cavoid\u201d the tragedy in Surfside, Florida, where nearly 100 people died after a 12-story condo building partially collapsed in the middle of the night.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to avoid a Florida,\u201d said Waukesha Police Lt. Kevin Rice, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-milwaukee-salvation-army-engineering-28dda029a2bd3bfc581e716bf160720e\">according<\/a> to the Associated Press.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The determination to evacuate on Thursday evening was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cityofwaukesha\/posts\/265497785608198\">based<\/a> on \u201cdeteriorating structural conditions\u201d found by independent evaluation, said the city.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to an independent structural engineering report, the building is at an imminent threat of collapse due to compromised conditions of existing structural columns,\u201d a Waukesha city Facebook post stated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The city also noted that there were 48 housing units in the building and that it would work with the Salvation Army to arrange for housing for those who had been displaced by the move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand the impact this has [on] the families that are being affected by this decision, but the public safety is of the utmost importance,\u201d the city said. \u201cWe will have more detailed information for the media tomorrow, but tonight our priority is to notify each and every resident of the affected properties that they must immediately evacuate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much more can Waukesha take right now?\u201d said community member Vanessa Terraza.<\/p>\n<p>Six people were killed and dozens wounded in Waukesha\u2019s Christmas parade <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-6th-person-a-child-has-died-from-waukesha-car-attack-alleged-killer-offered-bail-again\">where<\/a> a suspect intentionally drove his vehicle into participants. One of those killed in the attack was eight-year-old Jackson Sparks.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another community member said that her father, who lived in the building was away at Bible study during the evacuation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t even know if he knows he isn\u2019t going to have a home when he comes back from Bible study,\u201d said Jacqueline Gonzales. \u201cHe\u2019s got nothing right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this summer, a condo in Florida collapsed leading to 98 deaths.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe collapse came as the building was undergoing its 40-year recertification, which likely meant steep assessments for condo owners to finance structural and other problems identified several years earlier,\u201d ABC <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/summer-lawsuit-trial-deadly-florida-condo-collapse-81493329\">reported<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Court action is expected this summer as families of those killed in the collapse are seeking damages saying that the building was structurally unsafe and constructed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcmiami.com\/news\/local\/lawsuit-claims-surfside-condo-collapse-triggered-by-building-work\/2622574\/\">alleges<\/a> that the collapse was \u201cpreventable\u201d and that the condo \u201cwas an older building in need of routine repairs and maintenance, but it was not until excavation and construction began on the luxury high-rise condominium project next door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not granting extensions or continuances.
