Pete Ricketts (R) has taken on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) as he uncovered their hiring of a firm pushing UNL to incorporate the tenets of critical race theory into nearly all aspects of the university system, telling Breitbart News that \u201cwhile the University has repeatedly denied that their plan includes Critical Race Theory, their own records reveal that the consultant behind their efforts is a critical race theorist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom racially motivated hiring practices to harmful trainings, the University\u2019s plan would inject Critical Race Theory (CRT) into every corner of campus,\u201d Ricketts <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.nebraska.gov\/press\/gov-ricketts-university-chancellor-drop-ideological-indoctrination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a November 18 press release. \u201cIt will pit people against each other by conditioning everyone to see others through the lens of race rather than as individuals with unique strengths. UNL\u2019s focus should be on educational excellence, not ideological indoctrination.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The plan comes courtesy of&nbsp;Halualani and Associates, a diversity, inclusion, and equity consulting organization <a href=\"https:\/\/diversity.unl.edu\/documents\/Halualani-Associates%20Presentation-092517.pdf\">hired<\/a> for nearly $300,000 to \u201cmap\u201d UNL\u2019s diversity \u201caction\u201d and recommend more \u201cdiversity efforts\u201d for the university to initiate in the future. Halualani and Associates\u2019 five-year study was commissioned in 2011, and in 2017 UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green <a href=\"https:\/\/news.unl.edu\/newsrooms\/today\/article\/diversity-analysis-identifies-nebraskas-strengths-need-for-goals\/\">announced<\/a> his intention to move forward with the firm\u2019s recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis highly-paid consultant is not only a CRT scholar,\u201d Ricketts explained to Breitbart News, \u201cbut they have called for the overthrow of capitalism and a tax on the use of English. The University must scrap their plan to push CRT on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed,&nbsp;Halualani and Associates founder and Managing Principal Rona Tamiko Halualani has written about the \u201cHegemony of English\u201d and the need to \u201creplace\u201d what she calls the \u201cWestern modernization paradigm.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>As part of her crusade, in her book <i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">The Handbook of Critical Intercultural Communication<\/i>,&nbsp;she proposes \u201cThe English Tax\u201d in which \u201cone of the objectives \u2026 is the curtailment of the use of English. The users of English, whether they be native or nonnative, will hesitate to use English when the English Tax is practiced. They will think twice if they should use English or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the English words and sentences will be taxed,\u201d Halualani says. \u201cNot only the English documents, but also English e-mails, audio-visual materials, textbooks, and spoken words will be taxed. Hollywood movies will be taxed because of the English language used in them. Multinational corporations will be taxed for the English language for their business activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the help of Halualani and Associates\u2019 extreme founders, by 2020, UNL <a href=\"https:\/\/journey.unl.edu\/action-plan\">branded<\/a> its pursuance of critical race theory policy as its \u201cJourney for Anti-Racism and Racial Equity\u201d and opened its mission statement with a call to action based on the police killing of George Floyd, which has become a boilerplate remark for many universities, school districts, and corporations across the country in their implementation of similar policies:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p>It was yet one more reminder of the disproportionate numbers of Black and Brown individuals who die at the hands of police in the United States, and of longstanding structural racism and lingering white supremacy in our country.&nbsp;George Floyd\u2019s murder, in the wake of many others, also <strong>sparked a call for institutions and other power structures to be more responsive to racism and to be, in fact, anti-racist. Silence was no longer an option<\/strong>. [Emphasis added].<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Under the direction of Green and Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion Marco Barker, UNL\u2019s \u201cJourney\u201d promises a perpetual state of \u201caction,\u201d saying, \u201cAny set of actions will not reflect all of the work that must be done to dismantle racism, but it provides a starting point identified by many stakeholders across the institution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a November 30, 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.nebraska.gov\/press\/choosing-educational-excellence-over-ideology\">column<\/a> titled \u201cChoosing Educational Excellence over Ideology,\u201d Ricketts charged Green with having capitulated to a plan developed by \u201cideologues\u201d who believe \u201cUNL is a racist institution.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cChancellor Ronnie Green believes the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) is racist,\u201d Ricketts asserted in the column. \u201cUnder his leadership, UNL recently released a plan to address \u2018institutional racism\u2019 as part of its \u2018Journey for Anti-Racism and Racial Equity.\u2019 From racially motivated hiring practices to divisive trainings, the plan would inject Critical Race Theory (CRT) into every corner of campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor continued:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote readability=\"24\">\n<p>This plan is the product of ideologues\u2014not thoughtful Nebraska academics. Needless to say, I could not be more disappointed in the Chancellor\u2019s plan, and I completely disagree with the notion that UNL is a racist institution. UNL\u2019s focus should be on educational excellence, not ideological indoctrination. At its core, the plan is legally questionable, intellectually flawed, and politically charged.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s misguided focus on achieving equity of outcomes, rather than equality of opportunities, is pushing a Marxist and communist ideology. It fails to honor our American values of respecting individual rights and focusing on excellence. And it betrays the legacy of our country\u2019s great civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who dedicated his life to the dream of Americans judging one another according to the content of their character and not skin color.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But the university has denied its usage of critical race theory altogether, with Green saying in a statement, \u201cCritical race theory is not mentioned anywhere in this plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have said this before, CRT is not imposed on this campus, nor will it be,\u201d Green continued. \u201cNothing in this plan changes that. Recruiting more diverse candidates for faculty and staff has nothing to do with quotas. It\u2019s about getting diverse candidates for a job and then hiring the most qualified person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, University of Nebraska system President Ted Carter <a href=\"https:\/\/nebraska.edu\/president\/communications\/letters\/2021\/11\/an-open-letter-to-the-people-of-nebraska\">wrote<\/a> a November 22 open letter to Nebraskans in which he \u201capplaud[ed] Chancellor Ronnie Green for bravely beginning the dialogue\u201d but assured that \u201cwe will not impose critical race theory, nor any theory, upon students. We will not hire candidates based on their skin color. We will not close our doors to any qualified student. We will not limit the free, robust exchange of ideas on campus \u2013 one of the most cherished ideals in higher learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>As Breitbart News has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/01\/education-department-extends-million-dollar-funding-for-critical-race-theory-training-program\/\">reported<\/a>, given the emergence of critical race theory as a major political issue, institutions who wish to implement it may surreptitiously refer to it by other means, or camouflage it behind phrases like \u201cculturally responsive teaching\u201d \u2014 which uses the same CRT acronym \u2014 \u201cculturally competent,\u201d \u201canti-racist,\u201d and \u201cequity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For UNL, however, the use of critical race theory was more obvious, as it <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gagetaylor\/status\/1466119998254960641?s=20\">referenced<\/a> chief critical race theory purveyor Ibram X. Kendi as a source in defining its \u201cJourney.\u201d The reference has since been deleted.<\/p>\n<p>To \u201cembark on a Journey For Anti-Racism and Racial Equity,\u201d the call to action promised to \u201c[utilize] Ibram Kendi\u2019s definition on becoming \u2018actively conscious about race and racism\u2019 and taking \u2018actions to end racial inequities.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18980466\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" readability=\"32\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/UNL-Kendi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18980466\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/UNL-Kendi.jpg\" alt=\"UNL &quot;Call to Action&quot; referencing Ibram X. (Taylor Gage \/ Twitter).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Green said in the call to action that \u201cnow must be different. This cannot be another moment where we collectively rage at injustice, acknowledging pain and then take no meaningful action. We must take real steps to address racial inequities and a history of exclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>University of Nebraska Board of Regents member Jim Pillen <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jim_pillen\/status\/1461066138666913794?s=20\">said<\/a> his board was not notified of the \u201cJourney,\u201d until after it was implemented. \u201cThe Board of Regents has not approved this so-called \u2018journey.\u2019 To call Nebraska students and staff racist is wrong. To give preferential treatment in hiring based on race is wrong,\u201d he said. \u201cWe must fight the crusade to implement Critical Race Theory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Ricketts\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.nebraska.gov\/press\/gov-ricketts-university-chancellor-drop-ideological-indoctrination\">office<\/a>, Green also \u201cmisrepresented [the governor\u2019s] position on it in conversations with University stakeholders. He has told people that I support it, and nothing could be further from the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a November 22 press conference, Ricketts responded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zh4QQ94wb2E&amp;t=1818s&amp;ab_channel=GovernorPeteRicketts\">saying<\/a>, \u201cI was misled by Ronnie Green. I have lost all faith in Ronnie Green \u2014 I don\u2019t believe anything he says anymore. And I don\u2019t know how you get that back. So, I could not be more disgusted with what just happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat document is basically saying the University of Nebraska is systematically racist,\u201d the governor continued. \u201cI don\u2019t believe it.\u201d He added:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>Do we need to address racism where we see it? Absolutely. But for an institution of higher education to say, \u2018Hey we have discrepancies in how minorities are doing\u2019 and then draw the conclusion that everything is systematically racist, that\u2019s not even good academic performance. That\u2019s not even good academic thinking. That\u2019s soft thinking.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Green <a href=\"https:\/\/bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com\/dailynebraskan.com\/content\/tncms\/assets\/v3\/editorial\/d\/53\/d53d23a0-5252-11ec-a4a6-bb97c53773e5\/61a6e5d85094d.pdf.pdf\">stated<\/a> he \u201capologized to the Board of Regents&nbsp;for not fully engaging them in the development of our Commitment to Action prior to it being rolled out to our UNL community, or of the work of our Journey since it was announced in the summer of 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Ricketts met with Carter Wednesday, UNL diversity, inclusion, and equity statements were watered down, mostly removing references to Kendi.<\/p>\n<p><em>Breccan F.
