The league that can\u2019t get out of its own way has done it again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At 11:59 p.m. Wednesday night, Major League Baseball\u2019s collective bargaining agreement expired, resulting in owners locking out the players and the first work stoppage since the 1994-1995 season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the league\u2019s best efforts to make a deal with the Players Association, we were unable to extend our 26 year-long history of labor peace and come to an agreement with the MLBPA before the current CBA expired,\u201d MLB commissioner Rob Manfred <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/32761620\/mlb-mlbpa-fail-reach-new-labor-agreement-league-issues-lockout-first-1990\">wrote<\/a> in a prepared statement. \u201cTherefore, we have been forced to commence a lockout of Major League players, effective at 12:01am ET on December 2.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimply put, we believe that an offseason lockout is the best mechanism to protect the 2022 season,\u201d Manfred continued. \u201cWe hope that the lockout will jumpstart the negotiations and get us to an agreement that will allow the season to start on time. This defensive lockout was necessary because the Players Association\u2019s vision for Major League Baseball would threaten the ability of most teams to be competitive. It\u2019s simply not a viable option. From the beginning, the MLBPA has been unwilling to move from their starting position, compromise, or collaborate on solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The threat of a lockout has been looming for quite some time, as the 2016 CBA was set to expire. In negotiations for a new CBA, the players and owners have not been able to agree on a few key issues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis shutdown is a dramatic measure, regardless of the timing,\u201d the MLBPA said in a statement. \u201cIt is not required by law or for any other reason. MLB players would also like to address the practice of teams holding highly-regarded prospects in the Minor League\u2019s in order to manipulate their service time, as well as organizations \u201ctanking\u201d in order to bottom out and have a minimal payroll.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Max Scherzer \u2014 who recently signed a three-year $130 million deal with the New York Mets \u2014 provided a statement to The Athletic as a member of the MLBPA\u2019S executive subcommittee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless this CBA completely addresses the competition (issues) and younger players getting paid, that\u2019s the only way I\u2019m going to put my name on it,\u201d Scherzer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theringer.com\/mlb\/2021\/12\/2\/22814339\/mlb-players-lockout-faq\">said<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While the lockout is still a long way off from impacting actual games, it does have an immediate impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Free agents are not allowed to sign during the lockout, while no contact is allowed between union players and team employees, meaning players rehabbing from injuries are not allowed to work with team trainers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The last MLB work stoppage resulted in the cancellation of the 1994 World Series and shortened the 1995 season to 144 games.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Joe Morgan is the Sports Reporter for The Daily Wire.
