We must fight back! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7x3UZGDlrT\">https:\/\/t.co\/7x3UZGDlrT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ron DeSantis (@RonDeSantisFL) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RonDeSantisFL\/status\/1466482335940030465?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 2, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The post shared a video by Kara Frederick, a research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, who testified in a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/UwKUx-Io-_E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hearing<\/a> before the Communications and Technology Subcommittee of House Energy and Commerce Committee on Wednesday on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwitter and Facebook censor Republican members of Congress at a rate of 53 to 1 compared to Democrats,\u201d Frederick said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwitter suspends conservatives 21 times more often than liberals,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The September <a href=\"https:\/\/newsbusters.org\/blogs\/free-speech\/alec-schemmel\/2021\/09\/21\/53-1-big-tech-censors-gop-members-congress-tons-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> she cited also noted:<\/p>\n<p><em>But besides censoring those Republicans already in Congress, Big Tech has also reportedly taken measures that impact new Republicans attempting to join the legislative body. Republican candidates running for U.S. Congress have been censored at least 15 times since November of 2019. Free Speech America could not find a single example of Democrat candidates facing censorship.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Frederick worked at Facebook from 2016 to 2017 and helped develop its Global Security Counterterrorism Analysis Program. She believed she was helping improve democracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I was wrong, it\u2019s 2021, and the verdict is in: Big Tech is an enemy of the people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In her <a href=\"https:\/\/energycommerce.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.energycommerce.house.gov\/files\/documents\/Witness%20Testimony_Frederick_2021.12.01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">testimony<\/a>, Frederick also cited an October study that said, \u201cThe Wall Street Journal published leaked documents that revealed Facebook created and used two internal tools that suppressed right wing content, media traffic, and reach on its site in the aftermath of Donald Trump\u2019s 2016 presidential victory. Facebook\u2019s research concluded that if the tools were removed, \u2018very conservative\u2019 traffic would increase by tens of percentages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2021\/7072\/BillText\/er\/HTML\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bill<\/a> in May to ban social media companies from deplatforming political candidates. The law stated, \u201cSocial media platforms that unfairly censor, shadowban, deplatform, or apply post-prioritization algorithms to Florida candidates, Florida users, or Florida residents are not acting in good faith. \u2026 Social media platforms have unfairly censored, shadow banned, deplatformed, and applied post-prioritization algorithms to Floridians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In July, The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/clinton-appointed-judge-blocks-desantis-on-penalizing-big-tech-for-censorship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that a federal judge appointed by former President Bill Clinton issued a preliminary injunction blocking the Florida law.<\/p>\n<p>In his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.flnd.371253\/gov.uscourts.flnd.371253.113.0_1.pdf\">injunction<\/a>, U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle argued that banning \u201cde-platforming\u201d likely violated<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>the free speech rights of the tech companies, writing, \u201cThe legislation compels providers to host speech that violates their standards \u2014 speech they otherwise would not host \u2014 and forbids providers from speaking as they otherwise would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added sarcastically, \u201cLike prior First Amendment restrictions, this is an instance of burning the house to roast a pig. \u2026 Balancing the exchange of ideas among private speakers is not a legitimate governmental interest.
