He was listed as a co-defendant in a civil case that was dismissed in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact Check:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maxwell, a former confidant of the deceased convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, is currently on trial for federal sex trafficking charges, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2021\/12\/01\/nyregion\/ghislaine-maxwell-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The New York Times<\/a>. Social media users have been claiming that Abloh, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/28\/style\/virgil-abloh-dead.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">died on Nov. 28<\/a> of a rare form of cancer, was a co-defendant in the criminal case against her. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/11\/24\/fact-check-document-coconspirators-ghislaine-maxwell-criminal-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/11\/24\/fact-check-document-coconspirators-ghislaine-maxwell-criminal-case\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1638555823791000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0tOXvcrouBXnd3e34ph5i3\">(RELATED: Does This Image Show \u2018Co-Conspirators\u2019 In Ghislaine&nbsp;<span class=\"il\">Maxwell<\/span>\u2018s Criminal Case?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While it is true that Abloh died the day before Maxwell\u2019s trial began, he is not a co-defendant in her criminal case. Maxwell is the only defendant listed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/press-release\/file\/1291491\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">original indictment<\/a> in the case and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/17318376\/united-states-v-maxwell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other court documents<\/a> available on CourtListener. Likewise, Check Your Fact reviewed a section of the Department of Justice\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/united-states-v-ghislaine-maxwell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a> dedicated to the case and did not find any mention of Abloh.<\/p>\n<p>The claim likely stems from a civil lawsuit filed in 2020 against 38 entities, including Abloh, titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ia801807.us.archive.org\/3\/items\/gov.uscourts.nysd.543369\/gov.uscourts.nysd.543369.2.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Latham et al v. The 1953 Trust et al<\/a>.\u201d In that case, the plaintiff alleged that the 38 entities, which included Epstein\u2019s estate, Maxwell, The Walt Disney Company, Beyonc\u00e9 and others, were involved in human trafficking, abuse and financial exploitation of the plaintiff. The case was dismissed by a U.S. District judge as \u201cfrivolous\u201d in September 2020, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/casetext.com\/case\/latham-v-1953-tr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">court documents<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dockets.justia.com\/docket\/new-york\/nysdce\/1:2020cv07102\/543369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">records<\/a> available online.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/16\/nyregion\/ghislaine-maxwell-jeffrey-epstein-trial.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The New York Times<\/a> reported Nov. 16 that the prosecutors for Maxwell\u2019s federal sex-trafficking trial said they would argue there were three co-conspirators, Epstein and two other unnamed individuals.
