Marco Rubio (R-FL) challenged the&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em> \u2013 a newspaper with a long history of defending communist atrocities \u2013 to explain its decision to withhold critical information indicating Chinese dictator Xi Jinping was personally the architect behind the ongoing genocide of Muslim minorities in the country.<\/p>\n<p>China is currently running what is believed to be one of the world\u2019s largest concentration camps in the occupied western region of East Turkistan, formally labeled \u201cXinjiang\u201d by Beijing. Extensive evidence compiled by human rights experts and journalists has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2021\/05\/19\/report-chinas-destruction-uyghur-people-first-technology-enabled-genocide\/\">proven<\/a> that the Chinese Communist Party, under Xi\u2019s control, is subjecting the ethnic Uyghur minority people of East Turkistan to a variety of crimes against humanity including torture, gang rape, forced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/06\/08\/eyewitnesses-china-sterilizing-entire-uyghur-villages\/\">sterilization<\/a>, systematic abortion and infanticide, and slavery.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The U.S. government under both Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden have formally declared China\u2019s actions against the Uyghurs and other Muslims groups in East Turkistan a \u201cgenocide.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18978810\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" readability=\"36\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18978810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GettyImages-88874420.jpg\" alt width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chinese policemen beat Uyghur women who are protesting the detention of their family members on July 7, 2009, in Urumqi, the capital of China\u2019s Xinjiang region. (GREG BAKER\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Xi\u2019s regime <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2018\/09\/13\/china-muslim-torture-camps-are-necessary-education-centers\/\">claims<\/a> that the concentration camps are \u201cvocational training\u201d facilities that help underprivileged Uyghurs develop job skills and keep them from engaging in jihad. The Chinese Communist Party has defended forced abortions and sterilization as a victory for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2021\/01\/08\/china-celebrates-uyghur-genocide-as-victory-for-feminism\/\">feminism<\/a>&nbsp;that has made Uyghur women \u201cmore confident and independent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the most powerful person in China,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/892208\/chinas-president-xi-jinping-now-has-a-dozen-titles-and-counting\/\">holding<\/a> at least 12 official titles, little evidence exists to disassociate Xi from the Uyghur genocide. The information the&nbsp;<em>New York Times&nbsp;<\/em>withheld regarding Xi in its 2019 coverage, however, would serve as hard evidence in any potential case against Xi for engaging in genocide and crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the Hague, which specializes in prosecuting world leaders for such atrocities.<\/p>\n<p>The ICC has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/dec\/11\/international-criminal-icc-china-uighur-genocide-claims\">refused<\/a> to prosecute Xi, demanding more evidence of his involvement in the genocide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor unknown reasons, the <em>New York Times<\/em> appears to have intentionally withheld documents that directly linked top Chinese Communist Party officials, including General Secretary Xi Jinping, to the ongoing genocide of Uyghur Muslims in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region,\u201d Rubio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm?p=Press-Releases&amp;id=24939FB8-E229-44C5-B865-AA08B12FE7EF\">wrote<\/a> in a letter to&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em> publisher&nbsp;A.G. (GREG BAKER\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Much of the information missing from the&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em> coverage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/nov\/29\/leaked-papers-link-xinjiang-crackdown-with-china-leadership\">came to light<\/a> this week as a result of the work of the Uyghur Tribunal, an independent effort to document China\u2019s genocidal campaign. Among that evidence are several speeches Xi personally issued complaining that East Turkistan\u2019s population was too Uyghur and directly tying the success of China\u2019s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), an global infrastructure colonialism project, to the eradication of Uyghurs and other Muslims from the region.<\/p>\n<p>One of the world\u2019s top researchers documenting the Uyghur genocide, Adrian Zenz, confirmed that the information revealed at the Uyghur Tribunal came from the same source as the&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em> reporting from 2019, but that the contents of the newspaper\u2019s reporting did not include much of what was revealed to be in the documents this week.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>In his letter to the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em> publisher, Rubio demanded answers to five questions:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\" type=\"1\">\n<li>Who made the decision not to release the full documents that someone risked their life to obtain and give to the&nbsp;<i>New York Times<\/i>&nbsp;in a desperate attempt to save people\u2019s lives in Xinjiang?<\/li>\n<li>Why did the&nbsp;<i>New York Times&nbsp;<\/i>choose to misleadingly characterize Xi\u2019s policy goals as simply counterterrorism and blame the atrocities on mid-level Communist Party members when you had documents laying out Xi\u2019s actual genocidal goal?<\/li>\n<li>Did the&nbsp;<i>New York Times&nbsp;<\/i>have any discussions or communications with the Chinese Communist Party and Chinese Government about any of the 403 pages it received? If so, did the&nbsp;<i>Times<\/i>&nbsp;make any deal or concessions to withhold the release of any of the documents, including Xi\u2019s speech about what he wanted to do in Xinjiang?<\/li>\n<li>Did anyone at the&nbsp;<i>New York Times<\/i>&nbsp;reevaluate that decision after the Trump and Biden administrations determined that the atrocities being committed in Xinjiang constitute crimes against humanity and genocide?<\/li>\n<li>Will the&nbsp;<i>New York Times<\/i>&nbsp;commit to release the remaining approximately 86 pages of the document?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u201c[I]t looks as though the&nbsp;<i>New York Times&nbsp;<\/i>covered up proof that Xi sanctioned the total destruction of a people,\u201d Rubio wrote. \u201cNo words of apology will erase your paper\u2019s complicity in the ongoing genocide, but at the very least, you should end the censorship of your reporters and allow the full details to come out impartially, without fear or favor.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18979098\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" readability=\"36\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18979098\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GettyImages-1235252304.jpg\" alt width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sen. (Drew Angerer\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The senator also noted the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>\u2018 woeful history of protecting genocidal actors, most prominently the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulitzer.org\/news\/statement-walter-duranty\">Pulitzer-winning<\/a> falsehoods published by journalist Walter Duranty denying the genocide of Ukrainians under Joseph Stalin known today as the Holodomor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe may never know why the <em>New York Times<\/em> and its man in Moscow felt the need to cover up Josef Stalin\u2019s atrocities intended to silence and wipe out millions of peasants, but it seems that history is repeating itself,\u201d Rubio wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytco.com\/press\/new-york-times-response-to-senator-rubios-letter\/\">published<\/a> a response on Wednesday in which it both denied withholding the information in question and justified withholding the information in question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenator Marco Rubio is simply wrong on the facts,\u201d the response read in part. \u201cThe <em>Times<\/em> has long covered China thoroughly and unflinchingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper nonetheless admitted to not publishing some of the information Rubio referenced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <em>Times<\/em> chose not to publish the documents in their entirety over concerns that forensic analysis might allow the Chinese authorities to identify the source and put the person at risk,\u201d the response read.<\/p>\n<p>The response did not answer any of Rubio\u2019s five questions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18979322\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" readability=\"36\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18979322\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GettyImages-52733894.jpg\" alt width=\"1920\" height=\"1493\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Walter Duranty, the Moscow correspondent for the New York Times who denied Stalin\u2019s genocide of the Ukrainians, reading a copy of \u2018Pravda,\u2019 circa 1925. The Duranty example is the most prominent \u2013 particularly given that the Pulitzer committee refused to rescind its award in light of the fact that Duranty\u2019s reporting was a lie \u2013 but far from an aberration.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1950s, another&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em> reporter, Herbert Matthews, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2016\/11\/28\/zumwalt-new-york-times-used-fake-news-help-fidel-castro\/\">published<\/a> false reports claiming that soon-to-be brutal Cuban dictator Fidel Castro had amassed a sizable army, was highly popular in the country, and actively fighting against leader Fulgencio Batista. In reality, Castro and a small group of communists had entrenched themselves in the Cuban countryside while legitimate, and non-leftist, rebels fought Batista in the cities, such as the members of the Revolutionary Directorate and rebel leader Frank Pa\u00eds.
