He noted that his decision to retire was \u201ctough\u201d to make \u201cat a challenging time for our republic with the very pillars of our democracy under threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>DeFazio leaving will cast more doubt on the Democrats\u2019 chances of keeping the House after the midterms since he has been leading the charge in his&nbsp;Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to push through parts of the partisan agenda items from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>The agenda ideas include the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill \u2014 which was signed into law by Biden \u2014 and the&nbsp;$1.75 trillion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/19\/house-passes-behemoth-build-back-better-act\/\">Build Back Better Act<\/a>, also known as the Democrats\u2019 reconciliation infrastructure bill, which was passed in the House on a near party-line vote, with one Democrat defector. The bill was considered the \u201cmarquee legislation\u201d&nbsp;for Biden\u2019s legislative agenda, in addition to adding three-quarters of a trillion dollars to the&nbsp;American&nbsp;deficit over five years.<\/p>\n<p>DeFazio retiring not only makes him the 19th Democrat to announce they are abandoning the House by retirement or choosing to run for a different position at either the state or local level, but DeFazio would become the third committee chair to make the announcement. Courtney Parella, a spokeswoman from the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), said,&nbsp;\u201cCommittee Chairs don\u2019t retire unless they know their majority is gone. Nancy Pelosi\u2019s days as Speaker are numbered.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The congressman has been a close confident to Pelosi, voting with her <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/represent\/members\/P000197-nancy-pelosi\/compare-votes\/D000191-peter-a-defazio\/117\">100 percent<\/a> of the time and&nbsp;not turning away from helping Pelosi pass partisan agenda ideas. Pelosi will now have to find a Democrat willing to run in the district, potentially against Republican Alek Skarlatos, an Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/08\/21\/army-veteran-alek-skarlatos-americans-enemy-lines-bidens-colossal-failure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">veteran<\/a> and competitive contender who has been on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/midterm-election\/2021\/10\/19\/oregon-democrat-rep-peter-defazio-outraised-republican-candidate-third-quarter-ahead-tough-midterm-battle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fundraising<\/a> spree since announcing his candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>Skarlatos noted Wednesday in response to DeFazio\u2019s retirement that the Oregon Democrat was leaving after \u201c36 years of failure\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"11.326315789474\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">After 36 years of failure\u2013burning forests, poorest congressional district in the state, partisan policies that have destroyed southwest Oregon\u2013and turning his back on the people he was elected to serve Peter DeFazio is retiring.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Alek Skarlatos (@alekskarlatos) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alekskarlatos\/status\/1466109628912046082?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 1, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While DeFazio, 74, has been in charge of major Democrat legislation in his committee, he has also faced multiple problems. He was caught on a hot mic in October <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/10\/29\/democrat-peter-defazio-republican\/\">blurting<\/a> profanity during a committee hearing when the time was yielded to a Republican member of Congress. While&nbsp;it remains unclear which Republican the comments were directed towards,&nbsp;DeFazio said,&nbsp;\u201cOh, you fucking asshole,\u201d right before Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) had time yielded for him to speak.<\/p>\n<p>Breitbart News in October <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/01\/peter-defazio-uses-house-transportation-committee-influence-policy-affecting-boathouse\/\">uncovered<\/a> a letter from&nbsp;DeFazio&nbsp;allegedly abusing his chairmanship by&nbsp;sending a&nbsp;letter to the Army Corps of Engineers in opposition to a proposed rule to put permanent restrictions on part of the Washington Channel to protect the&nbsp;most vulnerable parts of an Army base. However, the congressman was in opposition to protecting the area where he keeps his houseboat, which he uses as his primary \u201cDC residence\u201d and allegedly resides.<\/p>\n<p>Breitbart News has extensively reported on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/29\/18-democrats-will-abandon-the-house-more-than-triple-gop-needs-to-win-back-majority\/\">Pelosi\u2019s majority crumbling<\/a>&nbsp;in the past and the Democrats\u2019 struggles to&nbsp;keep members in the House but also find new candidates to run for office.<\/p>\n<p><i>Jacob Bliss is a reporter for Breitbart News.
