Or, to be more exact, someone else in mind.<\/p>\n<p>The actor he wanted hadn\u2019t been seen on screen in eight years, and his brash persona rubbed plenty of people the wrong way in La La Land. Plus, he\u2019s a loud and proud Republican unwilling to play by Hollywood\u2019s rules.<\/p>\n<p>None of that mattered. Sonnier just had to add Vincent Gallo to the project.<\/p>\n<p>Gallo, now 60, eventually agreed to co-star in The Daily Wire original, but Sonnier says it took all of his persuasive efforts to land the mercurial star. It was more than worth it, he adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is terrifying,\u201d the producer says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShut In,\u201d directed by D.J. Caruso (\u201cDisturbia\u201d) follows a single mom (Rainey Qualley) protecting her children from an abusive ex (Gallo).<\/p>\n<p>Sonnier initially connected to Melanie Toast\u2019s \u201cShut In\u201d script after learning about it from The Black List, a website connecting unproduced screenplays with industry professionals. Sonnier initially teamed with a traditional Hollywood studio, New Line Cinema, to produce the screenplay. At one point Jason Bateman of \u201cOzark\u201d fame was in line to helm the project.<\/p>\n<p>Enter a global pandemic, which put the project on pause. Sonnier eventually wrested control of \u201cShut In\u201d back from the studio. He approached The Daily Wire about it via his Bonfire Legend film studio, and once the website gave him the green light, he was on the film\u2019s Louisiana set just 30 days later.<\/p>\n<p>Snagging the movie\u2019s monster, though, wasn\u2019t as easy.<\/p>\n<p>Sonnier had met Gallo years earlier and still had his contact information. So he cold called the actor, who shot to fame by writing, directing and starring in the 1998 indie film \u201cBuffalo \u201966.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had been following not only several of my movies and was very pleased with my work, but he also was well aware of our partnership with The Daily Wire,\u201d Sonnier says of their initial conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Gallo wasn\u2019t sold on acting again after all this time, particularly in a film he wasn\u2019t directing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe tried to say no a hundred times,\u201d the producer recalls.<\/p>\n<p>But Sonnier finally got his man, with the approval of Caruso. And once Gallo signed up, his commitment astounded Sonnier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe really went all in in a way I don\u2019t always see with some of the greatest actors on the planet,\u201d he says, comparing Gallo\u2019s commitment level to that of Heath Ledger on \u201cThe Dark Knight\u201d set.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had a very particular wardrobe, set of mannerism and speech patterns,\u201d the producer says, adding something else few stars would do for the role. Gallo had one of his teeth, a \u201chealthy one,\u201d Sonnier notes, pulled to complete the transformation into his part. \u201cHe crafted a completely three-dimensional villainous character \u2026 when you make the villains human, it makes them that much more terrifying and real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At times, Sonnier says it was hard to watch him hitting his marks through the on-set monitor.<\/p>\n<p>Gallo\u2019s challenging reputation is no secret. He clashed with co-star Christina Ricci on the set of \u201cBuffalo \u201966,\u201d leaving the young star torn about the experience. She\u2019s proud of the film and praised Gallo\u2019s talents, but she recalls some confrontations on the set that left her jarred.<\/p>\n<p>A quick YouTube search reveals Gallo berating a small group of journalists during a chat about \u201cBuffalo \u201966.\u201d Gallo\u2019s last directorial effort, 2010\u2019s \u201cPromises Written in Water,\u201d nabbed a brief festival run but never got a mainstream release, per Gallo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2011\/07\/vincent-gallo-doesnt-plan-on-releasing-promises-written-in-water-117190\/\">wishes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sonnier found a different Gallo on his movie set.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d love to work with him again. He was an absolute gentleman \u2026 he was so dedicated and so kind,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Gallo isn\u2019t just a singular actor and director. He\u2019s worked as a model, singer, director and more, a true renaissance man who rejects the trappings of fame. He\u2019s also a provocateur, showcasing artwork and social media posts quick to rile the easily offended and, perhaps, those with thicker skins, too.<\/p>\n<p>One example: His website features an escort service option \u2014 one of numerous satirical elements on his site \u2014 plus original art work excoriating politicians like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (a T-shirt with her image on it with the word \u201cignorant\u201d written across it).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that if he wasn\u2019t a successful satirist no one would be bothered by it,\u201d Sonnier says. \u201cThe fact that he gets under people\u2019s skin and he is successful in drumming up controversy is the mark of a great artist in many regards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not particularly bothered by it,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>What the prolific producer does want, though, is for \u201cShut In\u201d to be seen by people across the ideological spectrum.
