The person had recently returned from South Africa, according to the Associated Press. \u201cWe knew it was just a matter of time before the first case of omicron would be detected in the United States,\u201d said Fauci.<\/p>\n<p>According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the person is exhibiting only mild symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the development, California Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized there was \u201cno reason to panic,\u201d but insisted that Americans should get vaccinated and stay indoors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCA\u2019s large-scale testing and early detection systems have found the Omicron COVID-19 variant in California. We should assume that it\u2019s in other states as well,\u201d he t<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GavinNewsom\/status\/1466120183018233856?s=20\">weeted<\/a>.&nbsp; \u201cThere\u2019s no reason to panic \u2014 but we should remain vigilant. That means get vaccinated. Get boosted. Wear a mask indoors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While it has been reported that the Biden administration is considering extreme measures such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/desantis-vows-to-protect-florida-from-biden-we-will-not-let-them-lock-you-down-or-take-your-jobs\">new round of lockdowns<\/a> to tackle the new variant, on Monday\u2019s edition of The Daily Wire\u2019s \u201cMorning Wire\u201d podcast, guest Johns Hopkins University\u2019s Dr. Marty Makary explained why taking a measured approach to the variant may be the best course of action for the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the first thing is that we shouldn\u2019t jump to conclusions. There\u2019s a lot of fear about it, but historically all the variants to date of COVID, all 2000 of them, have been encompassed by natural and vaccinated immunity,\u201d Dr. Makary said on the podcast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we should feel comforted in that, even though we don\u2019t have good data on whether or not this evades immune protection. And I think the other point people should know is that the therapeutics that we have \u2014 the new antiviral drugs that are coming on and some of the existing medications, like fluvoxamine \u2014 work against any variants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we should feel good about our ability to fight this, [even] if it evades immune production,\u201d he continued. \u201cWhich again is unlikely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked, \u201cIs it more or less dangerous from what we\u2019ve seen so far as traditional COVID?\u201d Dr. Makary responded, \u201cWe don\u2019t know, but it\u2019s hard for a virus to mutate to become more dangerous at this point. None of the mutations have really demonstrated that it may become more contagious, but if it\u2019s encompassed by our current immune protection, then we should be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later on in the interview, Makary again reiterated that based on the evidence so far that \u201cif we look at all the variants to date, we\u2019ve got a good track record to say that immune protection works. It\u2019s durable and it\u2019s something we can depend on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I would say, don\u2019t change your lives. Let\u2019s not create fear based on the unknown,\u201d addressing Americans wondering what the next steps should be in the face of the omicron variant.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most importantly, Makary predicted that \u201c\u2026Variants are going to continue to happen year-to-year. We\u2019re going to see this virus ebb and flow at low levels.
