Sebold, who is white, claimed she saw a black man months later and believed he was her attacker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was smiling as he approached. He recognized me. It was a stroll in the park to him; he had met an acquaintance on the street,\u201d Sebold wrote. \u201c\u2018Hey, girl,\u2019 he said. \u2018Don\u2019t I know you from somewhere?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said she said nothing in return.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI looked directly at him. Knew his face had been the face over me in the tunnel,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>She later went to the police, not knowing her alleged attacker\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn officer suggested the man in the street must have been Broadwater, who had supposedly been seen in the area. Sebold gave Broadwater the pseudonym Gregory Madison in her book,\u201d the Associated Press&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/nov\/23\/alice-sebold-1981-rape-conviction-overturned\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sebold was unable to identify Broadwater in a police lineup after he was arrested, instead picking the photo of a different man and claiming, \u201cthe expression in his eyes told me that if we were alone, if there were no wall between us, he would call me by name and then kill me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the trial, however, Sebold identified Broadwater as her attacker. The other piece of evidence that led to his conviction came from an expert who said microscopic hair analysis determined Broadwater had committed the crime. As the AP noted, that \u201ctype of analysis is now considered junk science by the US Department of Justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Broadwater\u2019s attorney, David Hammond, would later tell the Post-Standard of Syracuse: \u201cSprinkle some junk science onto a faulty identification, and it\u2019s the perfect recipe for a wrongful conviction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it was a true-crime film that led to a district attorney reopening Broadwater\u2019s case, The Blast <a href=\"https:\/\/theblast.com\/132405\/netflix-star-victoria-pedretti-exits-true-crime-film-after-accused-is-exonerated\/\">reported<\/a>. Tim Mucciante, who was performing research and fact-checking for the film version of \u201cLucky,\u201d quite the production, saying he had found problems in the case. Mucciante, the Blast reported, hired a private detective and a lawyer to look deeper into the case, and what they found led to it being reopened and Broadwater\u2019s eventual exoneration after he had already spent more than 15 years in prison for the crime.
