Several countries in Europe and the Middle East rapidly restricted travel from southern Africa in response, though the variant\u2019s origins remain unknown.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Trailing Europe, American President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/26\/joe-biden-enacts-african-travel-ban-despite-calling-racist-xenophobic-2020\/\">issued<\/a> a wide-ranging ban on travelers from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, and Malawi last week while on vacation in Nantucket. Biden had previously condemned similar measures by predecessor Donald Trump as \u201chysterical xenophobia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several southern African leaders appeared to agree in the aftermath of the travel bans, most vocally President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, who decried the bans as unscientific and needless punishment towards the country that first documented Omicron\u2019s spread.<\/p>\n<p>South African officials have insisted that Omicron is not a South African variant and that scientists documenting its presence there is indicative of South Africa boasting an effective pandemic response. The first documented cases of Omicron variant infections reportedly originated in Botswana, but the government of that country has asserted that the people who tested positive for Omicron there were foreign diplomats. They refused to identify the countries the diplomats came from, citing concerns that they, too, would suffer negative political consequences.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Officials in the Netherlands revealed on Tuesday that they had documented a case of Omicron variant infection nearly a week before South Africa had. That first case, the officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/30\/report-omicron-variant-present-in-europe-before-identified-in-south-africa\/\">reported<\/a>, noted that the person involved had tested positive after arriving in Amsterdam from South Africa.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.021978021978\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Return of Mandatory Masks: Boris Johnson Announces \u2018Tighter Rules\u2019 in Response to Omicron Variant<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/96VgFOnOZS\">https:\/\/t.co\/96VgFOnOZS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1464659372580220931?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 27, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Dutch&nbsp;National Institute for Public Health and the Environment also revealed it had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/omicron-variant-covid-in-europe-netherlands-before-alert-raised\/\">documented<\/a> several other cases not yet confirmed to have ties to Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The governments of Belgium and Germany also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/omicron-variant-covid-in-europe-netherlands-before-alert-raised\/\">indicated<\/a> this week that they believe Omicron was spreading there prior to the alarm sounded in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The government of Nigeria <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/nigeria-detects-case-omicron-variant-october-81486083\">revealed<\/a> on Wednesday that it had found the Omicron variant in a test sample from a Chinese coronavirus patient taken in October, in addition to two travelers from South Africa testing positive for the variant after testing last week.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cRetrospective sequencing of the previously confirmed cases among travelers to Nigeria also identified the omicron variant among the sample collected in October 2021,\u201d the director-general of the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (CDC), Ifedayo Adetifa, announced.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists reportedly believe that the Omicron variant is present in at least 20 countries and counting so far. In the past 24 hours, the governments of Japan, Saudi Arabia, France, and Brazil have revealed confirmed Omicron cases, most of them in travelers arriving from Africa. Japan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/11\/30\/japan-logs-first-omicron-coronavirus-case-closes-borders\/\">documented<\/a> its first Omicron case less than 24 hours after announcing a <a href=\"https:\/\/english.kyodonews.net\/news\/2021\/12\/99f43e872ec0-breaking-news-japan-to-bar-foreign-resident-re-entry-from-areas-flagged-for-omicron.html\">near-total<\/a> ban on travelers from abroad. The traveler from southern Africa testing positive for Omicron in Brazil <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/1st-french-omicron-case-on-indian-ocean-island-of-reunion\/\">did so<\/a> the day after South Africa alerted the W.H.O. to its discovery.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The Saudi Arabian case, authorities stated, was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/saudi-arabia-reports-first-omicron-case-in-gulf\/\">traveler<\/a> from northern Africa, suggesting the variant has already begun spreading throughout the continent.<\/p>\n<p>Among other nations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/1st-french-omicron-case-on-indian-ocean-island-of-reunion\/\">logging<\/a> Omicron cases prior to the latest round of announcements were Australia, Canada, and Israel. (REMKO DE WAAL\/ANP\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The rush to reveal cases of Omicron variant coronavirus infections after South Africa alerted the world, and became the subject of widespread travel bans, raises mounting concerns that negative political consequences for countries making health alerts to the W.H.O. will deter prompt reporting in the future.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Saad Omer, director of the Yale Institute of Global Health, told NPR in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/coronavirus-live-updates\/2021\/11\/28\/1059619823\/omicron-travel-bans-covid\">interview<\/a> published Monday that public health experts fear \u201ca situation where, a month from now, a country health minister \u2026 gets a result of sequenced virus and they say, \u2018OK, if it is that widespread, it\u2019s going to come out anyways from some other country, why be the first one?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa, the South African president, made clear in a speech on Sunday that he felt the Biden administration and others had unfairly punished his nation for responsible pandemic management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are deeply disappointed by the decision of several countries to prohibit travel from a number of Southern African countries following the identification of the Omicron variant,\u201d Ramaphosa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/africa\/2021\/11\/29\/president-of-south-africa-rages-against-travel-bans-over-omicron-variant\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cThis is a clear and completely unjustified departure from the commitment that many of these countries made at the meeting of G20 countries in Rome last month. (ADRIAN DENNIS\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>President Lazarus Chakwera similarly condemned the Biden-style, anti-Africa bans, asserting in a short Facebook post on Sunday that the driver behind the travel ban policies was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/africa\/2021\/11\/29\/malawi-president-brands-biden-coronavirus-travel-ban-afrophobia\/\">Afrophobia<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Botswana Health Minister Edwin Dikoloti, in asserting that the Omicron variant did not originate in that country, also expressed concerns over attempts to \u201cgeo-politicize\u201d the pathogen. Dikoloti insisted that \u201csaying it originates from Botswana is out\u201d due to foreign diplomats first testing positive for the variant, but refused to say where the diplomats came from.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are concerned by attempts to stigmatize the variant and label a country where it was first detected as its country of origin,\u201d Dikoloti <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/africa\/2021\/11\/29\/botswana-blames-foreign-diplomats-spreading-omicron-coronavirus-variant\/\">said<\/a> on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese coronavirus originated in Wuhan, China, in late 2019.
