Black Friday saw a wave of these thefts across the United States.<\/p>\n<p>During an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/retail\/smash-and-grab-crime-wave-disrupting-retail-ahead-of-busy-shopping-season\">interview<\/a> with Fox Business\u2019 Madison Alworth, Michael Sapraicone \u2014 the CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/squadsecurity.com\/about-us\/\">Squad Security<\/a>, which specializes in high-end corporate, technology, and entertainment security services \u2014 observed that the nation is seeing a \u201cbig increase\u201d in smash-and-grab thefts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re hearing a lot of people looking for more security, but the key to the security is to put an effective plan together,\u201d Sapraicone explained. The interview took place in front of a New York City storefront that had been targeted in a smash-and-grab robbery earlier in November.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/tis-the-season-for-sticky-fingers-301426750.html\">press release<\/a> from Squad Security, Sapraicone \u2014 a former NYPD detective \u2014 predicted a rise in violent thievery ahead of the holidays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stars of sticky fingers are in alignment,\u201d Sapraicone said. \u201cShoplifting has already reached epidemic proportions in some parts of the country, and some stores have been forced to close because of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecurity guards can provide a measure of deterrence, which can be very effective,\u201d Sapraicone explained. \u201cBut when guards try to stop shoplifters, it can pose serious threats to law-abiding shoppers and passers-by. Often, retailers\u2019 policies will be just to let the shoplifters leave with the goods. Of course, this drives up the cost of merchandise and insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey likewise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/former-philly-pd-commissioner-california-looting-spree-wont-be-stopped-will-spread-across-the-country\">warned<\/a> that the robberies will spread across the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something now that I really unfortunately think is going to spread,\u201d Ramsey told CNN. \u201cRight now it\u2019s in California, but it will spread, there\u2019s no question about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what\u2019s driving all this, but it is of concern and it will continue,\u201d Ramsey added. \u201cIt is not going to stop anytime soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the problem has been spreading throughout the state, purported law enforcement experts in California have been accused of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/experts-mocked-after-saying-california-crime-spree-isnt-looting-but-rather-organized-robbery\">downplaying<\/a> what some describe as \u201clooting sprees\u201d as \u201corganized robbery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the Bay Area grapples with a wave of seemingly organized smash and grab robberies this weekend, policing and journalism analysts are cautioning against the use of the term looting,\u201d opined Julian Glover, who works as a \u201cRace and Social Justice Reporter\u201d at ABC affiliate KGO. In the report, University of New Haven criminal justice professor and former police officer Lorenzo Boyd said that calling the thefts \u201clooting\u201d carries a racist connotation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooting is a term that we typically use when people of color or urban dwellers are doing something,\u201d he said. \u201cWe tend not to use that term for other people when they do the exact same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Law enforcement officials have forwarded similar arguments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are talking about two incidents, we\u2019re not going to call this looting,\u201d San Jose police spokesman Sgt.
