Color of Change has repeatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/colorofchange.org\/press_release\/in-aftermath-of-shootings-color-of-change-addresses-facebooks-continued-support-for-white-nationalism\/\">called<\/a>&nbsp;on tech platforms to censor conservative content, asking Facebook to remove anti-immigration ads promoted by former President Donald Trump\u2019s re-election campaign and characterizing the messages as \u201cimplicit expressions of whit e nationalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The organization also <a href=\"https:\/\/act.colorofchange.org\/sign\/end-trump-exemption\/\">pushed<\/a>&nbsp;Facebook to censor \u201cright-wing politicians\u201d for spreading \u201clies, misinformation, and hate,\u201d and formed a <a href=\"https:\/\/act.colorofchange.org\/sign\/break-up-big-tech-now\/\">petition<\/a>&nbsp;for federal regulation aimed at stopping tech companies from spreading \u201cmisinformation\u201d and \u201chateful content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robinson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.org\/programs\/commission-on-information-disorder\/meet-the-commissioners\/\">serves<\/a> as co-chair of the Aspen Institute\u2019s Commission on Information Disorder, which published a report earlier in November <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/15\/left-leaning-commission-calls-on-the-biden-administration-to-develop-a-strategy-to-counter-disinformation\/\">calling<\/a>&nbsp;for the federal government to \u201cfind ways to counter the polarization often fueled by disinformation, misinformation, and dangerous conspiracy theories online.\u201d The commission also advocated for social media companies to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/15\/aspen-institute-misinformation-chris-krebs\/\">ban<\/a>&nbsp;misinformation \u201csuperspreaders\u201d from their platforms.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7301770\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"36\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7301770\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone (D-NJ) questions Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, at a hearing on Capitol Hill. (Photo by Kevin Dietsch-Pool\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The hearing also features former Facebook employee Frances Haugen, who filed whistleblower complaints against the tech giant and previously testified before the Senate on social media\u2019s ills.<\/p>\n<p>In her previous <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/06\/facebook-whistleblower-frances-haugen-mark-zaid-bill-burton\/\">testimony<\/a>, Haugen pushed to crack down on the amplification of \u201chateful\u201d speech and \u201cmisinformation,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/06\/facebook-whistleblower-frances-haugen-bill-burton-jan-6\/\">causing<\/a>&nbsp;many Republican lawmakers to express concerns. Haugen also called for a dedicated federal regulatory agency to oversee the content moderation policies of social media platforms, and urged lawmakers to pass legislation banning personalized recommendation algorithms.<\/p>\n<p>Haugen\u2019s written <a href=\"https:\/\/energycommerce.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.energycommerce.house.gov\/files\/documents\/Witness%20Testimony_Haugen_2021.12.01.pdf\">testimony<\/a>&nbsp;for the Wednesday hearing calls for federal oversight of \u201chow Facebook\u2019s products are used to influence vulnerable populations\u201d and to &nbsp;\u201ccorrect the broken incentive system that perpetuates consistent misalignment between Facebook decisions and the values espoused by the majority of its users.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other witnesses include Karen Kornbluh, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmfus.org\/find-experts\/karen-kornbluh\">serves<\/a>&nbsp;as director of the Digital Innovation and Democracy Initiative at the German Marshall Fund. Kornbluh pushed for cloud hosting platform Cloudflare to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/08\/16\/perspectives\/terrorism-hate-speech-violence-8chan\/index.html\">delete<\/a> 8Chan, a popular online forum, due to the purported presence of white nationalism and extremism on the site.<\/p>\n<p>The panel will also consider four bills seeking to reform Section 230, including the Civil Rights Modernization Act of 2021, introduced by Democratic Rep. Yvette Clarke, which <a href=\"https:\/\/clarke.house.gov\/clarke-calls-for-public-comment-to-help-protect-civil-rights-online\/\">seeks<\/a>&nbsp;to amend Section 230 by forcing covered content to comport with civil rights laws.
