Joe Manchin has pushed Senate Democrats to take responsibility for solving the debt ceiling crisis, throwing the onus on the Democrat-controlled Senate to act before default.<\/p>\n<p>Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has indicated the debt ceiling must be raised before December 15. If Senate Democrats fail to raise the debt ceiling, the United States will default on its debt for the first time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Democrats have opposed taking responsibility for raising the debt limit in the past. In October, Democrats were bailed out by Republicans, extending the debt ceiling into December. Following the vote to extend the deadline to December, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/10\/09\/mitch-mcconnell-gives-joe-biden-debt-limit-threat-after-chuck-schumers-childish-behavior-republicans-will-not-help-you-in-future-deal\/\">vowed<\/a> to not aid the Democrats in raising the debt ceiling again due Sen. Chuck Schumer\u2019s \u201cchildish behavior\u201d on the Senate floor.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell has so far not broken his promise, forcing Democrats to face raising the debt ceiling without ten Republican votes. Raising the debt ceiling requires 60 votes in the Senate.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.207627118644\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Durbin says don\u2019t expect debt ceiling news out of the Dem lunch. <\/p>\n<p>Asked if they\u2019ve settled on a strategy or will today: \u201cI don\u2019t think so. I don\u2019t think that\u2019s on the agenda\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jordain Carney (@jordainc) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jordainc\/status\/1465711713878040582?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 30, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Manchin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/manchin-indicates-pathway-resolving-debt-ceiling-standoff-n1285042\">told<\/a> reporters Monday he would support the complicated mechanism of reconciliation to increase the debt ceiling, though Schumer has opposed the tactic due to time constraints.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer\u2019s Senate calendar is already piling up with legislative initiatives he intends to pass before Christmas, an aggressive timeline. The measures include passing a routine defense bill, funding the government, and passing the radical $1.9 trillion reconciliation package.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that\u2019s our responsibility, to make sure that we take care of the debt ceiling. Democrats are now in control, so we want to make sure we do it and do it right,\u201d he admitted. \u201cThat pathway has been given. I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to be done, but that pathway has been given.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.3884892086331\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sen. Joe Manchin tells reporters he met with Schumer on \u201cjust one issue\u201d \u2014 an energy issue \u2014 in the Build Back Better bill. He is now meeting with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. He and Schumer met for just under an hour<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Manu Raju (@mkraju) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mkraju\/status\/1465726328133541893?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 30, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Manchin left open the possibility of working with Republicans raise the debt ceiling through reconciliation, perhaps hopeful the time-intensive mechanism may satisfy McConnell\u2019s negotiating position.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p class>\u201cI understand there was an agreement from the Republicans to do a very quick reconciliation by itself for the debt ceiling only,\u201d Manchin hinted.<\/p>\n<p class>Before the debt ceiling can be raised, Democrats must fund the federal government. Government funding will expire Friday. Senate Democrats are reportedly attempting to strike a deal with Republicans to partially find the government until late January.
