The original article, published in July, did not have any information about it.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/28-11-2021-update-on-omicron\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">designated<\/a> omicron, a new variant of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/activities\/tracking-SARS-CoV-2-variants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">variant of concern<\/a>\u201d on Nov. 26. The new strain, also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/28-11-2021-update-on-omicron\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">variant B.1.1.529<\/a>, was first reported by South African scientists and has since been detected in over a dozen other countries, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/29\/world\/covid-omicron-variant-countries-list-cmd-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Social media users have been claiming that the WEF has known about the existence of the omicron variant for months, pointing to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2021\/11\/how-scientists-detect-new-covid-19-variants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WEF article<\/a> that was first published in July as supposed evidence. The title of the WEF article is \u201cExplainer: This is how scientists detect new variants of COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the WEF article did not contain any information about the omicron variant in July. Check Your Fact reviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/*\/https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2021\/07\/how-scientists-detect-new-covid-19-variants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">archived versions<\/a> of the article and did not find any references to the omicron variant in it <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211126173158\/https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2021\/07\/how-scientists-detect-new-covid-19-variants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prior to Nov. 26<\/a>. \u201cOmicron\u201d and \u201cB.1.1.529\u201d do not appear anywhere in archived versions available on the Wayback Machine dating <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210712122356\/https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2021\/07\/how-scientists-detect-new-covid-19-variants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">July 12<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210713043309\/https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2021\/07\/how-scientists-detect-new-covid-19-variants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">July 13<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210714215707\/https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2021\/07\/how-scientists-detect-new-covid-19-variants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">July 14<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210922151556\/https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2021\/07\/how-scientists-detect-new-covid-19-variants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sept. 22<\/a>, keyword searches revealed.<\/p>\n<p>The article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2021\/11\/how-scientists-detect-new-covid-19-variants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">includes<\/a> an italicized note at the top that reads: \u201cThis article was originally published on 12 July 2021. It was updated on 26 November to include information about the new strain, B.1.1.529.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/10\/26\/fact-check-vaccinated-man-collapsing-talking-prince-charles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does This Video Show A Vaccinated Man Collapsing While Talking To Prince Charles?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some countries, including the U.S., France and Indonesia, have placed travel restrictions on certain African countries in response to the omicron variant, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/coronavirus-omicron-variant-travel-restrictions\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A tweet with over 3,900 retweets claims the World Economic Forum (WEF) reported on the omicron variant back in July.
