Viruses that contain RNA as their genetic material, such as coronaviruses and influenza, mutate even <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/what-does-it-mean-that-the-coronavirus-is-mutating\/\">more<\/a> than others. There are four species of influenza, each comprising dozens of subtypes and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/about\/viruses\/types.htm\">hundreds<\/a> of subtype combinations. Despite widespread annual vaccinations and the best efforts of public health experts, influenza continues to spread, as it has since <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.microbiologics.com\/the-history-of-influenza\/\">antiquity<\/a>, and to kill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/13-12-2017-up-to-650-000-people-die-of-respiratory-diseases-linked-to-seasonal-flu-each-year\">upwards<\/a> of 650,000 people each year.<\/p>\n<p>At least some part of COVID-19 appears to have originated in bats, making eradication even less likely. As Michael Osterholm, an epidemiologist at the University of Minnesota, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-00396-2\">explained<\/a> to the scientific journal <em>Science<\/em>, \u201cThere is no disease in the history of humankind that has disappeared from the face of the Earth when zoonotic disease was such an important part of, or played a role in, the transmission.\u201d In other words, COVID-19\u2014like influenza and the coronaviruses that cause the common cold\u2014is here to stay.<\/p>\n<p>Even if biology had not fated endless COVID variants, politics would have. Powerful interests in elected government, the administrative state, and putatively private enterprise seized upon the coronavirus to grow their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/billionaire-wealth-covid-pandemic-12-trillion-jeff-bezos-wealth-tax\/\">wealth<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/fury-spreads-gavin-newsom-extends-emergency-powers-4-more-months-after-being-sued-1648908\">power<\/a>. So despite a low infection fatality <a href=\"https:\/\/principia-scientific.com\/study-covid-infection-fatality-rate-at-only-0-15-percent\/\">rate<\/a>, widespread vaccines, and effective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/health\/medical\/are-monoclonal-antibodies-effective-against-covid-19-what-you-need-to-know\/ar-AANydRk\">treatments<\/a>, our cynical ruling class has every incentive to prolong the sense of crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we need to just get our mindset that the virus is still in control,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/28\/health\/us-coronavirus-sunday\/index.html\">warns<\/a> William Schaffner, an epidemiologist at the University of Minnesota. \u201cI don\u2019t care about your COVID fatigue.\u201d But the virus is not in control of anything; people are. In the old American republic, the people controlled the government through their elected representatives within boundaries set by the Constitution. In the new American oligarchy, unaccountable technocrats restructure society according to their own whims no matter what the people want, and they justify their rule by the dubious claim that they represent \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FaceTheNation\/status\/1465003501541597191\">science<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The more COVID mutates, the more the symptoms remain the same: cough, fever, and the loss of our rights and way of life, which unlike our senses of smell and taste will not return once we have recovered from the virus. Biological science ensures that the \u201comicron\u201d variant will become the \u201cpi,\u201d then the \u201crho,\u201d then the \u201csigma,\u201d and so on.
