They said the B.1.1.529 strain, as it is technically classified, only became known as the \u201cSouth Africa variant\u201d because the laboratory in Durban, South Africa, quickly identified the new mutation of the coronavirus and warned the rest of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>South Africans, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, complained they were being unfairly ostracized and punished with travel bans.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.731884057971\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Putting a travel ban on South Africa for alerting the world about a new variant (due to excellent sequencing capacity) is like banning the room with the smoke detector when there\u2019s a fire in your house.  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/B11529?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#B11529<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NewVariant?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NewVariant<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Clinton du Preez (@Cleintoon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Cleintoon\/status\/1464078378743513089?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 26, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cThese restrictions are completely unjustified and unfairly discriminate against our country,\u201d President Ramaphosa <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-omicron-variant-risk-high\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Yale Institute of Global Health director Saad Omer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/coronavirus-live-updates\/2021\/11\/28\/1059619823\/omicron-travel-bans-covid\">told<\/a> <\/span><span>NPR<\/span><span> on Sunday that South Africa\u2019s treatment could set a troubling precedent that makes other countries think twice about isolating diseases and variants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou don\u2019t want a situation where, a month from now, a country\u2019s health minister \u2026 gets a result of a sequenced virus and they say, \u2018OK, if it is that widespread, it\u2019s going to come out anyways from some other country, why be the first one?\u2019 And that cycle starts,\u201d Omer said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There clearly has been a surge of coronavirus cases in South Africa, especially around the capital of Pretoria, and many of the new cases appear to be Omicron. The strain looks to be more contagious, more resistant to vaccines, and more likely to infect young children, but some South African doctors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/omicron-variant-drives-rise-in-covid-19-hospitalizations-in-south-africa-hot-spot-11638185629\"><span>hopefully pointed<\/span><\/a><span> to evidence that Omicron infections are less severe.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Professor Salim Abdool Karim, a medical adviser to the South African government, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/safrican-expert-says-vaccines-likely-effective-vs-severe-covid-19-variant-2021-11-29\/\"><span>predicted<\/span><\/a><span> on Monday that South Africa\u2019s infection rate could triple to over 10,000 by the end of this week. Reuters noted there \u201chas not been a steep increase in hospital admissions or [Chinese coronavirus] deaths\u201d associated with the new wave of infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>South Africa has one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2021\/11\/28\/world\/covid-omicron-variant-news\"><span>higher vaccination rates<\/span><\/a><span> in Africa, but still much lower than the U.S. or Europe. About 25 percent of South Africans have received at least one dose of a vaccine, compared to 64 percent in North America and 62 percent in Europe.
