(House Energy and Commerce Committee via AP)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Recently, the Australian high court ruled that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/australia-wants-facebook-held-liable-for-anonymous-comments\/\">publishers can be held liable for public comments on online forums.<\/a> The ruling caused news companies such as CNN to deny Australian users access to their Facebook pages.<\/p>\n<p>At a televised press briefing, Morrison stated:&nbsp;\u201cThe online world should not be a wild west where bots and bigots and trolls and others are anonymously going around and can harm people. That is not what can happen in the real world, and there is no case for it to be able to be happening in the digital world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The legislation would introduce a complaints mechanism that would allow anyone that thinks they have been defamed, bullied, or attacked on social media to submit a report and demand that the social media platform remove the offensive material.<\/p>\n<p>If the content is not removed from the platform, a court process could force the social media platform to reveal the personal details of the offending commenter.&nbsp;\u201cDigital platforms \u2014 these online companies \u2014 must have proper processes to enable the takedown of this content,\u201d Morrison said. \u201cThey have created the space and they need to make it safe, and if they won\u2019t, we will make them (through) laws such as this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more at Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/australia-introduce-new-laws-force-media-platforms-unmask-online-trolls-2021-11-28\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Lucas Nolan is a reporter for Breitbart News covering issues of free speech and online censorship.
