Tom Suozzi (D-NY) announced he is joining the already crowded race for&nbsp;New York governor, challenging Gov.&nbsp;Kathy Hochul (D), who has had less than a year on the job since she was elevated to the position after the former embattled governor resigned earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am running for Governor of NY as a common sense Democrat who gets things done,\u201d Suozzi <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tom_Suozzi\/status\/1465358846923264003\">tweeted<\/a> Monday morning. \u201cI have the track record, common sense approach to governing &amp; bold new vision to get it done. Please take a look at my video and share. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0GiQIja1qr\">https:\/\/t.co\/0GiQIja1qr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tom Suozzi (@Tom_Suozzi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tom_Suozzi\/status\/1465358846923264003?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 29, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Suozzi joining the race and leaving the House of Representatives further hurts&nbsp;House Speaker Nancy Pelosi\u2019s (D-CA) chances of keeping the wafer-thin House majority as the congressman is the eighteenth House Democrat to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/10\/18\/droves-of-democrats-exiting-the-house-create-massive-problems-ahead-of-midterms\/\">announce<\/a> he is leaving the House due to retirement or running for a different position in the state or local level.<\/p>\n<p>Suozzi\u2019s decision comes after Thanksgiving when he reportedly said he had \u201clots to think about over Thanksgiving.\u201d Over the weekend,&nbsp;Suozzi also <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/central-ny\/ny-state-of-politics\/2021\/11\/28\/rep--suozzi-to-announce-whether-he-ll-run-for-governor\">turned down<\/a> an offer from&nbsp;New York Mayor-elect Eric Adams (D) after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/22\/rep-tom-suozzi-may-leave-congress-for-n-y-mayors-admin-lots-to-think-about-over-thanksgiving\/\">announcing<\/a> during a press conference last week that he tried to persuade his longtime political ally to join his administration as deputy mayor.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI will do everything I can to help my friend Mayor-elect @ericadamsfornyc &amp; the people of NYC succeed,\u201d Suozzi <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tom_Suozzi\/status\/1464658396058210308?s=20\">tweeted<\/a> Saturday. \u201cAfter discussing it with my family, I believe the best way for me to help him and NYC is in elected office. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/04\/report-democrat-tom-suozzi-seriously-considering-running-for-new-york-governor\/\">told<\/a> reporters earlier this month that he \u201cwould love to be the governor of New York state,\u201d and he was&nbsp;\u201cseriously considering running.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The congressman who has voted <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/represent\/members\/P000197-nancy-pelosi\/compare-votes\/S001201-thomas-suozzi\/117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">100 percent<\/a> of the time on major votes with Pelosi allowing her to pass&nbsp;partisan policies, also&nbsp;represents a largely&nbsp;suburban House district, which could potentially help him in his gubernatorial bid; however, leaving the seat would be a struggle for Democrats to defend without a popular incumbent such as&nbsp;Suozzi. Thus, potentially giving Republicans a likely seat to pick up in New York since&nbsp;Democrats have struggled to find new candidates willing to run for office.<\/p>\n<p>Suozzi has been a target for Republicans this past year. The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/23\/nrcc-expands-list-of-targeted-democrats-releases-campaign-ads\/\">added<\/a> him to their \u201cExit List\u201d earlier this month. The list is compiled full of House Democrats the committee was pushing to&nbsp;either retire or face a strong Republican candidate that could unseat him. Camille Gallo, an NRCC spokeswoman, said,&nbsp;\u201cTom Suozzi is making the smart decision to quit Congress rather than lose in&nbsp;2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Breitbart News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/05\/08\/report-tom-suozzi-gave-himself-37000-for-office-rent-from-his-congressional-committee\/\">previously<\/a> reported that&nbsp;Suozzi allegedly gave himself&nbsp;tens of thousands of dollars for \u201coffice rent\u201d from his Congressional campaign committee since last year.<\/p>\n<p>His&nbsp;Federal Election Commission (FEC) filing showed that he used&nbsp;$37,860 from his&nbsp;Congressional campaign committee for&nbsp;\u201coffice rent.\u201d However, the money was given to the owner of the rental space, a company called&nbsp;Ruvo Realty LLC. The congressman\u2019s&nbsp;financial disclosure shows he was the sole owner of the space.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats trying to fight to stay in the majority are also facing tough redistricting battles. <em>Politico<\/em>&nbsp;recently&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/09\/15\/democrats-house-gop-maps-511868\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">outlined<\/a>&nbsp;the House Democrats spending their last two elections (2018 and 2020) talking about their achievements of unseating members in red districts \u2014 which have since gotten more competitive over the years. However, they did not realize the majority of the districts where millions of dollars and hundreds of hours were spent fighting could disappear after redistricting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats could find themselves spending large sums to defend the seat or be forced to shore up their claim to it during the once-in-a-decade redistricting process,\u201d the <em>New York Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/29\/nyregion\/tom-suozzi-governor-ny.html\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cDiverting more Democratic voters to the district could in turn complicate the party\u2019s efforts to use the process to seize one or two more House seats on Long Island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>Jacob Bliss is a reporter for Breitbart News.
