During their visit, the Simpsons stroll past a line of tanks that echoes the iconic \u201cTank Man\u201d photo and see a plaque that reads: \u201cTiananmen Square: On This Site, In 1989, Nothing Happened.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Simpsons also check out the embalmed corpse of dictator Mao Zedong, memorialized by Homer Simpson as \u201ca little angel that killed 50 million people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Watch below:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=zzt0xBXTNhI\">https:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=zzt0xBXTNhI<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>S16, E12 is simply missing from the list of episodes available to Disney+ viewers in Hong Kong. The Season 16 lineup jumps from Episode 11 to 13 without explanation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><i><span>Hong Kong Free Press<\/span><\/i> <span>(HKFP) <a href=\"https:\/\/hongkongfp.com\/2021\/11\/29\/disney-appears-to-censor-episode-of-the-simpsons-in-hong-kong-referencing-tiananmen-massacre\/\">noted<\/a>&nbsp;Monday that Hong Kong viewers who employ Virtual Private Network (VPN) tools to access Disney+ online \u2013 essentially masking their location by creating an anonymous Internet connection \u2013 are able to view Episode 12.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>HKFP <\/span><\/i><span>and many major media organizations \u2013 including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/29\/media\/disney-plus-simpsons-hong-kong\/index.html\"><span>CNN<\/span><\/a><span>, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/nov\/29\/disney-channel-launches-in-hong-kong-without-the-simpsons-tiananmen-square-episode\"><span>UK <\/span><i><span>Guardian<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span>, <\/span><\/i><span>the <\/span><i><span>New York Times, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-11-29\/disney-omits-the-simpsons-tiananmen-episode-in-hong-kong\"><span>Bloomberg News<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/global\/asia\/disney-plus-simpsons-hong-kong-1235120971\/\"><i><span>Variety<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span>, <\/span><\/i><span>and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/simpsons-china-censorship-1235053711\/\"><i><span>Hollywood Reporter<\/span><\/i><\/a>&nbsp;\u2013<span>&nbsp;asked Disney for comment on the censored episode, but none of them received a reply from the company as of press time on Monday. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Most of those organizations also attempted to contact Hong Kong officials to ask if Disney was ordered to black out the episode or if it did so on its own initiative. The officials did not respond to these inquiries.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cIt appears the episode has suffered precisely the kind of the censorship it was written to ridicule,\u201d the <\/span><i><span>Hollywood Reporter <\/span><\/i><span>noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been relentlessly tightening controls on speech and political activity in Hong Kong over the past year, ever since China bypassed the Hong Kong legislature in June 2020 to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2020\/06\/30\/chinas-hong-kong-national-security-law-takes-effect-ending-free-speech\/\"><span>impose<\/span><\/a><span> a \u201cnational security law\u201d that criminalized every activity the CCP considers threatening to its power.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>The national security law was quickly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/hong-kongs-civil-society-withers-under-national-security-purge\/\"><span>employed<\/span><\/a><span> to crush the remains of the massive 2019 pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong and purge pro-democracy city officials. It also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2020\/06\/30\/chinas-hong-kong-national-security-law-takes-effect-ending-free-speech\/\"><span>spawned<\/span><\/a><span> a series of increasingly heavy-handed censorship laws, cracking down on books, films, and movies the Communist Party considers \u201csubversive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>International human rights organizations are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/10\/25\/chinese-repression-forces-amnesty-international-to-close-hong-kong-office\/\"><span>pulling out of the city<\/span><\/a><span> because the environment has become so repressive that any statement critical of the government could be labeled subversive and prosecuted under the national security law. The law is especially militant about punishing \u201ccollusion\u201d between Chinese nationals and foreign governments or international organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In October, the Hong Kong legislature \u2013 now firmly controlled by Beijing \u2013&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2021\/10\/27\/hong-kong-legislature-outlaws-movies-threaten-national-security\/\"><span>passed<\/span><\/a><span> a bill that gave local officials enhanced powers to censor media they deemed \u201ccontrary to the interests of national security.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>The law was notably slack about punishing Internet streamers, but <\/span><i><span>HKFP <\/span><\/i><span>speculated big streamers such as Disney might still be growing nervous about testing the patience of CCP censors.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe apparently voluntary removal of the episode in Hong Kong \u2013 especially when done by a major U.S. media company \u2013 is a relatively new feature of civic life there,\u201d the <\/span><i><span>Hollywood Reporter <\/span><\/i><span>said of the <\/span><i><span>Simpsons <\/span><\/i><span>episode blackout in Hong Kong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chinese University of Hong Kong media expert Grace Leung told the <\/span><i><span>New York Times <\/span><\/i><span>that Disney \u201cobviously sent out a clear signal to the local audience that it will remove controversial programs in order to please\u201d CCP censors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Leung speculated Hong Kongers would grow more interested in using VPNs and other techniques to bypass censorship and view banned material like the <\/span><i><span>Simpsons <\/span><\/i><span>episode.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf they didn\u2019t do anything, then people may not be aware of the existence of that episode. But if you do it so obviously, then it arouses people\u2019s interest,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The growing influence of the CCP over American media corporations is a major topic of Breitbart News Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow\u2019s bestselling book&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Breaking-News-Exposing-Establishment-Corruption-ebook\/dp\/B08LDW29XN\/?tag=breitbart035-20\">Breaking the News: Exposing the Establishment Media\u2019s Hidden Deals and Secret Corruption<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Marlow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/the-media\/2021\/06\/07\/brian-thomas-breaking-the-news-china-underwrites-unprofitable-media-companies\/\">noted<\/a> U.S. corporations are well aware the Chinese government will punish them for violating its speech codes, and some of them have developed business models that depend on revenue from China to make up for losses elsewhere. Disney and some other big media companies own both news and entertainment divisions, so there is a constant danger that journalism will be compromised to ensure entertainment media can be sold profitably in the Chinese market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHow about ABC News, which is owned by the Walt Disney Company. Disney\u2019s business interests in China are vast, including billions of dollars in revenue from movies and theme parks. Recall that the end credits of the recent live-action remake of <em>Mulan<\/em> featured a thank you to a Chinese government security bureau linked to Uyghur concentration camps.
