However, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2021\/11\/29\/world\/omicron-variant-covid\">The New York Times<\/a> notes, experts believe that the current vaccines \u201care likely to offer protection from severe illness and death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephane Bancel <a class href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2021\/11\/29\/moderna-ceo-stephane-bancel-breaks-down-omicron-vaccine-strategy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> CNBC\u2019s Squawk Box that his company is currently researching the variant found last week in South Africa and already spreading in Europe and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Bancel \u201cfears that the antibodies Moderna\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine provides to fight against the virus could be eight times lower against the new strain,\u201d The Daily Mail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-10254393\/Moderna-CEO-warns-vaccine-antibody-levels-EIGHT-TIMES-lower-against-Omicron-variant.html\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are two key things that we don\u2019t know yet and will find out in [coming] weeks,\u201d Bancel said. \u201cOne is vaccine efficacy. What is the impact of this new variant on the vaccine efficacy, and we should know that in around two weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe this [variant] is highly infectious\u2026 it seems to be much more infectious than Delta,\u201d Bancel added.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2021\/11\/29\/world\/omicron-variant-covid\">The New York Times<\/a>, experts \u201chave said that it could be two weeks or longer before more information about the variant\u2019s transmissibility, and the severity of illness it causes, is available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the large level of mutation it is highly possible that the efficacy of the vaccines, all of them, is going down,\u201d Bancel said.<\/p>\n<p>The CEO said it will take Moderna researchers from two to six weeks to learn how effective their vaccine is against Omicron.
