Americans who live in rural and urban areas would benefit most from buying an electric car since they currently spend so much at the pump, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the physical infrastructure work was contemplated in the bill that was just signed, but there is more envisioned in the Build Back Better law,\u201d the transportation secretary said during the interview. \u201cIt contains incentives to make it more affordable to buy an electric vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUp to a $12,500 discount, in effect, for families thinking about getting an EV,\u201d he continued. \u201cFamilies that once they own that EV will never have to worry about gas prices again.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/19\/cnn-joe-biden-gasoline-prices-oil-china\/\">(RELATED: CNN Says Biden Is To Thank For Falling Gas Prices Days After Saying It Was Out Of His Control)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The $12,500 \u201cdiscount\u201d would be a tax credit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/build-back-better\/\">under<\/a> the Build Back Better Act, Democrats\u2019 budget reconciliation package making its way through Congress. Joe Manchin has opposed the provision, arguing that not all electric vehicles should be eligible for the credit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonews.com\/manufacturing\/sen-joe-manchin-speaking-toyota-event-west-virginia-calls-union-built-ev-tax-credit\">according<\/a> to Automotive News. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/elon-musk-tesla-union-bill-tax-incentive-unionized-ev-makers-2021-9\">Elon Musk<\/a>, chief executive of Tesla, which isn\u2019t unionized, in addition to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/545022\/toyota-ad-opposes-union-ev-tax-credit\/\">foreign car manufacturers<\/a> have also opposed the provision.<\/p>\n<p>Gasoline prices, which are <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/23\/crude-oil-prices-joe-biden-strategic-petroleum-reserve\/\">tied<\/a> to the price of crude oil, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwin1-rQ_r30AhUEoHIEHbhbB8sQFnoECAQQAQ&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fdailycaller.com%2F2021%2F11%2F24%2Fthanksgiving-gasoline-prices-crude-oil-high-level-2012%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw0MMNsSzcOmhaybbVjX2r_a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">surged<\/a> over the last several months, hitting multi-year highs, Energy Information Administration (EIA) data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/petroleum\/gasdiesel\/\">showed<\/a>. Average nationwide gas prices were down slightly to $3.39 per gallon on Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">according<\/a> to AAA.<\/p>\n<p>But the average cost of a new electric vehicle was $55,600 in 2019, nearly $20,000 more than the average price of all new cars, Quartz <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1695602\/the-average-electric-vehicle-is-getting-cheaper-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>. Charging an electric car with a range of 200 miles <a href=\"https:\/\/afdc.energy.gov\/fuels\/electricity_charging_home.html\">costs<\/a> about $9 and typically <a href=\"https:\/\/pod-point.com\/guides\/driver\/how-long-to-charge-an-electric-car\">takes<\/a>&nbsp;around eight hours.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, 60% of electricity generated in the U.S. originates from fossil fuel power plants, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/tools\/faqs\/faq.php?id=427&amp;t=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to the EIA.
