According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2021\/11\/29\/world\/omicron-variant-covid\">The New York Times<\/a>, experts \u201chave said that it could be two weeks or longer before more information about the variant\u2019s transmissibility, and the severity of illness it causes, is available,\u201d but also believe that current vaccines \u201care likely to offer protection from severe illness and death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The WHO has declared Omicron to be a \u201cvariant of concern\u201d and urged its 194 member states to vaccination high-priority groups and to \u201censure mitigation plans are in place\u201d should the strain spread widely.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Coetzee said none of those infected lost their sense of smell or taste or suffered serious health risks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt presents mild disease with symptoms being sore muscles and tiredness for a day or two not feeling well,\u201d Coetzee told the Telegraph. \u201cSo far, we have detected that those infected do not suffer the loss of taste or smell. They might have a slight cough. There are no prominent symptoms. Of those infected some are currently being treated at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She detailed one case of a 6-year-old girl who had \u201ca temperature and a very high pulse rate, and I wondered if I should admit her. But when I followed up two days later, she was so much better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coetzee added that the cases she has seen so far involved healthy people but expressed worry over elderly people and those with comorbidities, such as diabetes or heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we have to worry about now is that when older, unvaccinated people are infected with the new variant, and if they are not vaccinated, we are going to see many people with a severe [form of the] disease,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci said Sunday on ABC\u2019s \u201cThis Week\u201d that the U.S. should \u201cbe prepared to do anything and everything,\u201d including lockdowns, to battle Omicron.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just really need to, as I said so often, prepare for the worst. It may not be we\u2019ll have to go the route people are saying. We don\u2019t know a lot about this virus.
