The question posed to him in congress was whether he funded gain of function research. He either did or he didn\u2019t. He said he didn\u2019t. New evidence suggests he did. He also proclaimed: \u2018I represent science! \u2026 And if you damage science, you\u2019re doing something very detrimental to society\u2026\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ebright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/top-scientist-on-new-report-about-research-in-chinese-labs-its-clear-fauci-was-untruthful\">criticized<\/a> Fauci earlier this year after The Intercept obtained hundreds of pages of previously undisclosed information from the NIH that allegedly showed that EcoHealth Alliance used federal grant money to fund dangerous bat coronavirus research in the Chinese labs.<\/p>\n<p>Ebright said [<strong>emphasis added<\/strong>]:<\/p>\n<p><em>The materials show that the 2014 and 2019 NIH grants to EcoHealth with subcontracts to WIV funded gain-of-function research as defined in federal policies in effect in 2014-2017 and potential pandemic pathogen enhancement as defined in federal policies in effect in 2017-present.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The materials confirm the grants supported the construction\u2013in Wuhan\u2013of novel chimeric SARS-related coronaviruses that combined a spike gene from one coronavirus with genetic information from another coronavirus, and confirmed the resulting viruses could infect human cells.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The materials reveal that the resulting novel, laboratory-generated SARS-related coronaviruses also could infect mice engineered to display human receptors on cells (\u201chumanized mice\u201d).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The materials further reveal for the first time that one of the resulting novel, laboratory-generated SARS-related coronaviruses\u2013one not been previously disclosed publicly\u2013was more pathogenic to humanized mice than the starting virus from which it was constructed and thus not only was reasonably anticipated to exhibit enhanced pathogenicity, but, indeed, was *demonstrated* to exhibit enhanced pathogenicity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The materials further reveal that the the grants also supported the construction\u2013in Wuhan\u2013of novel chimeric MERS-related coronaviruses that combined spike genes from one MERS-related coronavirus with genetic information from another MERS-related coronavirus.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The documents make it clear that assertions by the NIH Director, Francis Collins, and the NIAID Director, Anthony Fauci, that the NIH did not support gain-of-function research or potential pandemic pathogen enhancement at WIV are untruthful.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ebright later criticized remarks made by former Biden COVID-19 senior adviser Andy Slavitt, saying that Slavitt was an \u201cempty head\u201d and a \u201cdolt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Empty suits will be empty suits.<br \/>Empty heads will be empty heads.<br \/>The mystery is why governments rely on empty suits and empty heads.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Richard H.
