And there\u2019s about ten or more of these mutations that are on that part of the virus, we call it the receptor binding domain, that actually binds to the cells in your nasopharynx and in your lung.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fauci continued, noting the possibility that the Omicron variant might have \u201can advantage in transmissibility,\u201d and that \u201cit might evade immune protection\u201d provided by monoclonal antibodies, convalescent plasma, and \u201cpossibly even against some of the vaccine-induced antibodies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it\u2019s not necessarily that that\u2019s going to happen, but it\u2019s a strong indication that we really need to be prepared for that,\u201d Fauci added.<\/p>\n<p>As to the question about tweaking the booster shots for this particular variant, Fauci stated that testing needs to be done to make that determination, but if changes are needed, they can be implemented relatively swiftly.<\/p>\n<p><em>So the critical questions now are: Do the antibodies block this well? And what is the seriousness of the disease? So there are enough people right now in South Africa that our South African colleagues are following to determine is this highly transmissible, but doesn\u2019t really give a severe disease, or does it really give the same kind of severity that we\u2019ve seen with Delta and other variants?
