But the theater abruptly announced the play\u2019s closure this week, acknowledging it failed to respond \u201cdecisively\u201d to an \u201cincident between members of the production.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAs a result of these missteps, some members of the production felt unsafe and not fully supported,\u201d the theater said in a statement.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"6.5506329113924\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Geffen Playhouse&#8217;s statement regarding the cancellation of Paradise Blue. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/znQ4FyOdNw\">pic.twitter.com\/znQ4FyOdNw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Geffen Playhouse (@GeffenPlayhouse) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GeffenPlayhouse\/status\/1463686317334843402?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 25, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The playwright provided her own version of the story in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/dominique.morisseau\/posts\/dear-theatre-villagemy-play-paradise-blue-will-no-longer-continue-its-run-at-the\/10159158393966998\/\">lengthy Facebook post<\/a>, alleging that \u201cBlack womxn\u201d artists and \u201cBIPOC\u201d individuals experienced \u201charm.\u201d She also accused the larger theater industry of a fostering a culture of \u201canti-blackness, anti-womxness, and anti-black-womxness.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe are not to be treated so insignificantly that when we are harmed, we are ignored. Asked to tough it out. Or worse, pretend to be listened to when in fact, we are being handled. Tolerated. And not respected. Nor heard. Protected. But the playwright alleged the theater failed to adequately address the \u201charm\u201d when it was reported to management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI demanded that an apology happen from a creative team member for their abuses against other members of the creative team,\u201d she wrote. \u201cAnd instead of staunchly backing this, the Geffen continued to enable more abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dominique Morisseau is an acclaimed playwright who was a recipient of a MacArthur&nbsp;Fellowship \u2014 the so-called \u201cGenius Grant\u201d \u2014 that comes with a $625,000 prize.
