Instead, his first episode features late-night legend Jay Leno, and following installments include such mainstream Hollywood fixtures as Patrick Warburton, Rob Riggle, and T.J. Miller.<\/p>\n<p>Warburton and Riggle\u2019s participation is particularly interesting, as both men are at the zenith of their careers. After finding fame playing David Puddy on the classic nineties sitcom, \u201cSeinfeld,\u201d Warburton went on to headline popular series like \u201cRules of Engagement,\u201d \u201cThe Tick,\u201d and \u201cLemony Snicket\u2019s Series of Unfortunate Events.\u201d He\u2019s also scored key roles in hit movies like \u201cTed\u201d and \u201cGet Smart.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Riggle, too, has been constantly cast in high-profile vehicles since first hitting the scene on \u201cThe Daily Show\u201d and \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d in the early 2000s. A list of his filmography reads like a rundown of every major comedy film of the last 15 years, including \u201cTalladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby,\u201d \u201cThe Hangover,\u201d \u201c21 Jump Street,\u201d \u201cThe Other Guys,\u201d and \u201cStep Brothers,\u201d to name just a few. His television credits are equally voluminous.<\/p>\n<p>So there\u2019s no question performers at their level would be well aware of the vitriol that has been flung at stars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/bill-burrs-new-comedy-special-punches-down-actors-disabilities-guest-column-1239665\/\">Bill Burr<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/arts-and-entertainment\/wp\/2017\/09\/27\/tim-allen-thinks-conservative-politics-might-be-why-last-man-standing-got-canceled\/\">Tim Allen<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/chris-rock-tweets-article-comedys-insufferable-wokeness-accused-insufficient-wokeness\/\">Chris Rock<\/a> for daring to suggest there\u2019s something rotten in the state of comedy. Yet, there they are, laughing alongside Carolla and interjecting their own one-liners as he goes into a hilarious rant about where he is on the \u201cracism spectrum\u201d (nowhere near \u201cKlan racist,\u201d but a guy who wants the freedom to laugh at an Asian friend\u2019s impression of a PF Chang\u2019s greeter.)<\/p>\n<p>Full disclosure, I work for the Daily Wire, of course, but I\u2019ve also been a film and TV critic for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/critics\/megan-basham\/movies\">18 years<\/a> and have reviewed previous Carolla productions. The two episodes I was able to prescreen convinced me that \u201cTruth Yeller\u201d has the potential to disrupt comedy\u2019s seemingly inexorable slide into unfunny political correctness and break the game wide open.<\/p>\n<p>Carolla\u2019s raunchy brand of humor lives harmoniously alongside the more serious, ideological products Daily Wire podcasters like Ben Shapiro, Michael Knowles and others offer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If Shapiro is the king of the constitutional and historical arguments, Carolla provides the everyman\u2019s gift for perceiving absurdity and skewering it with razor-sharp, blue-collar cleverness. For example, on recent demands that Netflix add Disclaimers to stand up specials from comedians like Dave Chappelle, Carolla quips, \u201cUm, here\u2019s your Disclaimer a** wipes. It\u2019s a joke. Done with the Disclaimer. It says, \u2018Stand up Special,\u2019 that\u2019s your Disclaimer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like late-night competitors on the big broadcast networks, Carolla cracks wise about the news of the day, except he makes points Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon would never dare. To wit, in one closing bit, he points out that the Founding Fathers didn\u2019t include enough mechanisms to protect the citizenry from idiocy:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Founding Fathers could never really have anticipated a Gavin Newsom. They were like, \u2018Oh we have to write the Constitution and protect people from kings and tyrants. They never anticipated stupid. Let me tell you how dumb Gavin Newsom is. All Gavin Newsom talks about is electric cars: \u2018We need more electric cars, we have to get more electric cars, we\u2019ve gotta lead the nation in electric cars.\u2019 And then he tells Elon Musk to hit the bricks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the counter-programming that \u201cTruth Yeller\u201d offers with its willingness to make fun of the left alongside the right (and Carolla does turn his fire on Republican politicians like Donald Trump as well), viewers will appreciate the sheer craft he displays. This is especially clear when he makes up standup routines on the spot based on words audience members have written on lottery-type balls that his guests select at random.
