(AP) \u2014 The family of two close friends from suburban Chicago who were <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/travis-scott-astroworld-dead-injured-crowd-surge-6c697502318c50ba4b57aa1c6f71f9bf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">killed at the Astroworld concert in Houston<\/a> this month have filed wrongful death lawsuits against rapper Travis Scott, the Live Nation entertainment company and others.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuits filed by the Naperville families of Jacob \u201cJake\u201d Jurinek, 20, and Franco Patino, 21, are part of a flood of <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/travis-scott-entertainment-houston-lawsuits-arts-and-entertainment-db79e408e2cae0a73c55c13660f4047b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">dozens of suits<\/a> against Scott and the companies behind the Nov. 5 event in which <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/travis-scott-entertainment-sports-science-dance-48f62331950fff34787741f169614ccc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">10 people were killed <\/a>and hundreds were injured when a crowd surge pushed concert-goers forward, crushing and trampling many of them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>As with many of the other lawsuits, this one puts the blame on the companies and Scott, an organizer of the concert who was on stage <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/astroworld-festival-deaths-travis-scott-entertainment-houston-music-5628f631f335ea5d182852ba0116d2cc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">when the deadly scene unfolded<\/a>, for failing to take even the most basic safety precautions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cDefendants egregiously failed in their duty to protect the health, safety, and lives of those in attendance at the concert, including but not limited to the failure to provide adequate security personnel to implement crowd control measures, proper barricades, and the failure to provide a sufficient amount of emergency medical support,\u201d the suits contends.<\/p>\n<p>Patino and Jurinek were both college students, Patino at the University of Dayton in Ohio and Jurinek at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. They had been football teammates at <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/travis-scott-entertainment-dance-houston-sylvester-turner-b91d2e53aa4671e9496940d349c4329c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Like the loved ones of the other victims, a partner in the Chicago law firm Corboy &amp; Demetrio, which filed the lawsuits this week in Harris County Courts in Houston, said the families are trying to make sense of something that makes no sense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA healthy, strong 20- or 21-year-old child goes off to a concert thinking he\u2019s going to have some fun, and they\u2019re going to be celebrating, in this case, Jake\u2019s 21st birthday,\u201d Corboy said, <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/suburbs\/naperville-sun\/ct-nvs-naperville-lawsuit-wrongful-death-best-friends-st-1124-20211124-ddwcmaszcvgonmjom2nnysyr5y-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">according to the Naperville Sun<\/a>. \u201cNobody expects to go to something as happy and joyous as concert where they end up dying.
