Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has an approval rating of 26%, as does White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain. Jennifer Granholm, Secretary of Energy, has an approval rating of just 25%.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his objectively negative approval rating, the attempt to portray Buttigieg as a popular option among unpopular figures appears to play into a broader media strategy to promote the former Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, as a frontrunner for the 2024 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Buttigieg presidential buzz has penetrated the White House,\u201d announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/11\/24\/pete-buttigieg-presidential-buzz-white-house-523281\">Politico<\/a>, on the same day.<\/p>\n<p>The desire to portray Buttigieg as a rising star of Democratic Party politics may be more indicative of the fact that there appear to be so few good choices remaining. President Joe Biden, despite his intent to run again in 2024 according to the White House, has an approval rating of just 36% \u2014 two points lower than Buttigieg. Vice President Kamala Harris, meanwhile, is even more unpopular, with her approval rating falling to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/kamala-harris-approval-rating-historic-low-compared-to-other-vp-2021-11\">historic low<\/a> of 28% earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>And the mission to elevate Buttigieg will likely be complicated by the fact that the former Mayor was on paid paternity leave for months while the U.S. experienced a crippling supply chain crisis \u2014 and no-one even noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile U.S. ports faced anchor-to-anchor traffic and Congress nearly melted down over the president\u2019s infrastructure bill in recent weeks, the usually omnipresent Transportation secretary was lying low,\u201d Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/west-wing-playbook\/2021\/10\/14\/can-pete-buttigieg-have-it-all-494710\">reported<\/a>. \u201cThey didn\u2019t previously announce it, but Buttigieg\u2019s office told West Wing Playbook that the secretary has actually been on paid leave since mid-August to spend time with his husband, Chasten, and their two newborn babies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the department told Politico that Buttigieg was \u201cmostly offline\u201d for the \u201cfirst four weeks\u201d except \u201cfor major agency decisions and matters that could not be delegated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has been ramping up activities since then,\u201d the spokesperson claimed, adding that Buttigieg will \u201ccontinue to take some time over the coming weeks to support his husband and take care of his new children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So while Buttigieg might be performing better than other members of Biden\u2019s cabinet, an approval rating of 38% is nothing to celebrate, especially for a high-level cabinet official who vanished when he was needed most.<\/p>\n<p>Ian Haworth is an Editor and Writer for The Daily Wire.
