I\u2019d make a bet that we last longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cI can\u2019t say that in China. They are probably listening anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the executive issued an apology, according to the New York Times:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI regret my recent comment because it\u2019s never right to joke about or denigrate any group of people, whether it\u2019s a country, its leadership, or any part of a society and culture,\u201d Mr. Dimon said. \u201cSpeaking in that way can take away from constructive and thoughtful dialogue in society, which is needed now more than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spokesman for the bank said that Mr. Dimon, who was in Hong Kong last week, \u201cacknowledges he should not speak lightly or disrespectfully about another country or its leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for the Chinese government said on Thursday that Dimon had the \u201cright attitude\u201d in issuing the apology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI noted the reports about how the individual involved has sincerely reflected,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/china-says-it-notes-jpmorgan-chiefs-sincere-regret-over-remark-2021-11-25\/\">said<\/a> foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian. \u201cI think this is the right attitude. I hope the media involved will stop hyping this issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In August, Chinese authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/jp-morgan-wins-permission-for-full-control-of-a-securities-business-in-china-11628285229\">granted<\/a> JPMorgan Chase permission to assume full control of a securities business \u2014 the first foreign company to be offered such an opportunity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Around the same time, multiple business lobbies \u2014 including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Business Roundtable, the National Retail Federation, the American Farm Bureau Federation, and the Semiconductor Industry Association \u2014 referred to China\u2019s financial market liberalization in a letter to President Biden requesting that the White House strengthen Sino-American economic ties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe commitment by China to open up its markets to U.S. financial institutions \u2014 and other U.S. financial service providers \u2014 reflects a hard-won U.S. achievement, and years of work by administrations of both parties,\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, major American businesses, industries, and celebrities have been expanding their activities in China to reap the benefits of its large and rapidly-growing consumer economy.
