Demand has also appeared to spike, as Kayak explained car rental searches are 230 percent higher than they were in 2019.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Autoslash.com CEO and founder Jonathan Weinberg <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/11\/23\/car-rental-prices-increase-75-percent-ahead-of-thanksgiving\/\">told<\/a> the <em>New York Post<\/em> that some rental customers are shelling out $300 a day for a vehicle in destinations such as New York, and nationwide the average is around $100 a day. He added that rental prices are up more than 50 percent in comparison to 2019.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThings are pretty crazy at the moment and the reason is because we have a massive shortage of rental cars, there is a semiconductor shortage, basically computer chips are not available and with today\u2019s modern cars, they require over 100 chips in each one,\u201d Weinberg shared with the <em>Post<\/em> on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18171674\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" readability=\"32\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-72387459.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18171674\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-72387459.png\" alt=\"Phoenix commuters drive on the I-10 Freeway during the morning commute to work April 5, 2005 in Phoenix, Arizona. (Photo by Jeff Topping\/Getty Images)\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo by Jeff Topping\/Getty Images<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Weinberg went on to add:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote readability=\"16\">\n<p>\u201cThings are pretty crazy at the moment and the reason is because we have a massive shortage of rental cars, there is a semiconductor shortage, basically computer chips are not available and with today\u2019s modern cars, they require over 100 chips in each one,\u201d Weinberg told The Post Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there was a lot of apprehension with traveling last year and the rental car companies still had enough inventory to meet that demand and now it\u2019s completely flipped on its head,\u201d Weinberg said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Twenty-nine-year-old Ed L. shared his expensive rental story with the <em>Post<\/em> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><span> \u201cI did this same trip two years ago, it was $27 a day,\u201d he explained.\u201d I just got banged for $307.57 for two days?! For a smaller car. A midsize?!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> \u201cI\u2019m in shock. I came today to pick it up and beat the rush but I had to cut a day off and I\u2019ll start tomorrow morning,\u201d he added. \u201cLast time I did this the gas and tolls cost more than the rental. I hope that\u2019s not true this time!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ivan Drury is the senior manager of insight at Edmunds and echoed Weinberg\u2019s sentiments about rental car supply and demand issues throughout the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><span> \u201cIt really comes down to the fact that last year during the heat of the pandemic, the rental agencies weren\u2019t moving units, no one was moving cars, they were holding on to these depreciating assets\u2026 they decided they were just going to have to sell these things,\u201d Drury explained.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As a result, inventory is down some 80 percent at rental companies, Drury added.<\/p>\n<p><span> \u201cRight now new car dealers only have about 20 percent of the inventory that they are accustomed to having during a normal year so we\u2019ve even seen that rental agencies [who] want to buy x amount of units, they can\u2019t even get those delivered to them, some rental car agencies are even resorting to used cars,\u201d he told the <em>Post<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gas prices will drive travel costs even higher for consumers. According to AAA, as of November 24, the national gas price average <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">was<\/a> $3.39 per gallon.
