If a ship is out of range of those stations, the information can be exchanged via satellite.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s not happening in the world\u2019s second-largest economy, a critical player in global trade. In the past three weeks, the number of vessels sending signals from the country has plunged by nearly 90%, according to data from the global shipping data provider VesselsValue.<\/p>\n<p>Many suspect that the sudden lack of shipping data was triggered by the Chinese government\u2019s crackdown on the international flow of data. CNN Business continued:<\/p>\n<p>The State Council Information Office, which acts as a press office for the country\u2019s cabinet, did not respond to a request for comment about why shipping providers were losing access to data. But analysts think they\u2019ve found the culprit: China\u2019s Personal Information Protection Law, which took effect November 1. It requires companies that process data to receive approval from the Chinese government before they can let personal information leave Chinese soil \u2014 a rule that reflects the fear in Beijing that such data could end up in the hands of foreign governments.<\/p>\n<p>The law doesn\u2019t mention shipping data. But Chinese data providers might be withholding information as a precaution, according to Anastassis Touros, AIS network team leader at Marine Traffic, a major ship-tracking information provider.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Chinese officials have introduced stringent new regulations on several industries in the span of a few months.<\/p>\n<p>In the interest of reducing costs for families, the Chinese government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/china-cracks-down-on-120-billion-private-tutoring-industry\">banned<\/a> for-profit tutoring, essentially gutting the $120 billion industry overnight. Previously, parents solicited tutoring services throughout a child\u2019s education to prepare them for the National College Entrance Examination, which determines whether a Chinese student is eligible for college education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Chinese government began <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/china-cracks-down-on-real-estate-industry-so-that-families-can-afford-housing\">regulating<\/a> the nation\u2019s real estate sector to ensure that families can afford housing. Among other reforms, the regime planned to increase mortgage rates, accelerate the development of public housing, and scrutinize private investors. According to President Xi Jinping, \u201chousing is for living in and not for speculation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina\u2019s property sector has been one of the biggest sources of discontent and the government is hell-bent on controlling prices so it doesn\u2019t lead to social unrest,\u201d Liao Ming of Prospect Avenue Capital told Al Jazeera. \u201cThe measures echo the policy curbs in education in that they are aimed at easing public angst against inequity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a further update to the \u201cOne Child Policy\u201d \u2014 which is now creating a demographic crisis in China \u2014 officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/china-now-says-it-will-allow-families-to-have-three-children-amid-fears-of-population-crash\">said<\/a> that couples are now allowed to have up to three children.
