Maynard Institute of Journalism Education, also lashed out at using the term because it signals \u201cthe depiction of the flash mobs running roughshod through the aisles of Louis Vuitton and other retailers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis seems like it\u2019s an organized smash and grab robbery,\u2019 Reynolds said. \u201cThis doesn\u2019t seem like looting. We\u2019re thinking of scenarios where first responders are completely overwhelmed. And folks often may be on their own.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The U.K.\u2019s <em>Daily Mail<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/\">reported<\/a> on the semantics debate:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"24\">\n<p>Their comments come after at least seven robberies involving gangs with as many as 50 thieves ransacked California stores, and each individual could avoid heavy criminal charges due to the state\u2019s 2014 law dictating that anyone caught shoplifting items whose value does not exceed $950 would be only charged with misdemeanors.<\/p>\n<p>Some experts fear that the law is being abused by organized crime rings who might be the true masterminds behind the gang of thieves, paying the low-level criminals to commit mass crimes for them in exchange for a slap on the wrist.<\/p>\n<p>The distinction in terminologies originates from the California penal code, which defines looting as \u2018theft or burglary\u2026 during a \u2018state of emergency,\u2019 \u2018local emergency\u2019 or \u2018evacuation order resulting from an earthquake, fire, flood, riot or other natural or manmade disaster.\u2019&nbsp;The term \u2018looting\u2019 gained infamy when it was predominately used to describe black survivors of Hurricane Katrina who stole water and other basic goods from local stores to survive through the aftermath of the storm.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <em>Mail<\/em> report noted that \u201cno local or national emergency has been declared for the Bay Area, where much of the crime has taken place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boyd blames the media of using the word \u201clooting\u201d to politicize that crime wave by connecting it to Kyle Rittenhouse, who was found not guilty in the death of two men while acting in self-defense.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018These types of massive organized smash-and-grabs were happening before the Rittenhouse situation happened,\u201d Boyd said. \u201cIt\u2019s a false equivalency. It\u2019s people trying to politicize crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On social media, critics from both politics and media seethed at what they saw as an attempt by these experts and other woke media organizations to whitewash the recent crime wave.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Julio Rosas, a Marine and Town Hall contributor, quipped on Twitter: \u201cFuture CNN chyron: Mostly peaceful shopping in the Bay Area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other conservatives took to social media to weigh in on the debate.<\/p>\n<p>Dinesh D\u2019Souza tweeted, \u201cExperts refuse to call a spade a spade, unless, of course, it\u2019s a spade wielded by a white male.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ex-Wisconsin Republican Governor Scott Walker cut to the chase: \u201cIt\u2019s looting. Just like there were riots in Kenosha, not just protests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The widespread crime wave forced Democrat California Gov.
