Rashida Tlaib\u2019s (D-MI) interview with Axios\u2019 Jonathan Swan, who had to point out to the congresswoman that the bill she supported would release everyone from federal prisons.<\/p>\n<p>As The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/but-thats-what-what-the-act-says-jonathan-swan-corners-rashida-tlaib-over-prison-bill-that-would-release-everyone\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Swan pressed Tlaib on her support for a 2020 initiative aimed at reforming the criminal justice system and ultimately abolishing the federal prison system entirely.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn 2020, you endorsed the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/03\/23\/980234498\/the-breathe-act-is-a-counterproposal-to-justice-in-policing-act\">BREATHE Act<\/a>, which is a series of proposals to transform America\u2019s criminal justice system and create, quote, \u2018a roadmap for prison abolition.\u2019 The BREATHE Act proposes emptying federal detention facilities within 10 years. To what extent have you wrestled with any potential downsides of releasing into society every single person who\u2019s currently in a federal prison?\u201d Swan asked.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Tlaib appeared to laugh off the question, saying, \u201cI think everyone\u2019s like, oh my God, we\u2019re going to just release everybody.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Swan immediately objected: \u201cBut that\u2019s what \u2014 that\u2019s what the act says.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Tlaib pushed back, arguing that her support for the bill was based on the fact that so many who were mentally ill were being incarcerated rather than being treated.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYeah, but did you see how many people are mentally ill that are in prison right now?\u201d she asked.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBut the act that you endorsed actually says release everyone,\u201d Swan continued to press Tlaib on the issue, to which she replied that it would be 10 years before the federal prisons were actually abolished and those incarcerated would be released.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDo you mean that you don\u2019t actually support that? \u2018Cause you used to endorse the bill,\u201d Swan continued.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNo, I endorsed the BREATHE Act and looking at federal \u2014 the policies and how we incarcerate,\u201d Tlaib replied.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tlaib insisted during the interview that she just wanted to end mass incarceration and understood that not all federal inmates can be rehabilitated. Tlaib also called Democrats with whom she disagreed with \u2013 such as Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) \u2013 \u201cCorporate Dems,\u201d claiming they were \u201cinfluenced and guided by folks that don\u2019t have the best interests of the American people in mind, so I\u2019m fearful.
