The Vatican Observatory Research Group operates a telescope in Arizona called the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>Fact Check:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In recent days, multiple Facebook users have been attempting to link the Vatican to a telescope supposedly called \u201cLucifer,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianity.com\/theology\/theological-faq\/how-did-lucifer-fall-and-become-satan-11557519.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">name<\/a> used to refer to Satan in Christianity. One iteration of the claim garnered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ExposingTheEliteAgenda\/photos\/a.1938967753082262\/2981606785485015\/?type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">over 300 shares<\/a> before being deleted.<\/p>\n<p>The post appears to be referencing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpe.mpg.de\/ir\/lucifer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LBT Near Infrared Spectroscopic Utility with Camera and Integral Field Unit for Extragalactic Research<\/a> (LUCIFER) at the Mount Graham International Observatory in Arizona. The LUCIFER, which was renamed LUCI in 2012, is actually an instrument mounted on the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpe.mpg.de\/ir\/lucifer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics<\/a>. The Vatican and its observatory are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lbto.org\/lbt-collaboration.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">not among<\/a> the research institutions listed on the LBT Observatory website as operating or owning the LBT.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the LBT, the <a href=\"https:\/\/mgio.arizona.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mount Graham International Observatory<\/a> hosts other telescopes, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/vaticanobservatory.org\/VATT\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope<\/a> (VATT). The VATT is operated by the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vaticanobservatory.va\/content\/specolavaticana\/en\/who-are-we-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vatican Observatory Research Group<\/a>, which falls under the Vatican Observatory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticanobservatory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">established<\/a> by the Holy See, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.as.arizona.edu\/vatican-advanced-technology-telescope\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Arizona\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tobias Herrmann, a spokesperson for the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lbto.org\/lbt-collaboration.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">part of<\/a> the LBT Observatory Collaboration, told Check Your Fact in an email that the claim was a \u201crather old rumor\u201d that had previously been debunked.
