The total cost of the payouts would reach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/01\/analysis-biden-proposal-could-turn-illegal-alien-families-into-millionaires\/\">$1 billion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>ACLU attorneys have since suggested that the payouts have stalled, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ap.org\/detail\/Nosettlementforseparatedmigrantfamiliesamidcriticism\/ab1f65a70d3c1ef5d4ab0c39a23bae0d\/text?hpSectionId=0f81e34e17a148dd997becee24bcc1d5&amp;st=hpsection&amp;mediaType=text&amp;sortBy=arrivaldatetime:desc&amp;dateRange=Anytime&amp;totalCount=10664&amp;currentItemNo=2\">according to<\/a> the Associated Press:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"22\">\n<p><strong>Migrants whose children were taken from them under former President Donald Trump\u2019s zero-tolerance border policy have not reached a settlement agreement with the U.S. government<\/strong>, a lawyer for the families said Thursday as he and other advocates pushed back at increasing criticism of a proposal to pay compensation to them. [Emphasis added]\n<p>Attorney Lee Gelernt of the American Civil Liberties Union would not discuss details of the talks nor confirm a previously reported settlement proposal of several hundred thousand dollars to each affected person. <strong>He did, however, hold out the possibility of a trial,<\/strong> featuring parents separated from children as young as six months as witnesses, if there\u2019s no agreement to end the litigation. [Emphasis added]\n<p><strong>\u201cAll I can say is there\u2019s no deal on the table and we have no timeframe necessarily,\u201d Gelernt said<\/strong> in a conference call with reporters. [Emphasis added]\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The sudden slow-walking of the case has come after intense backlash following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/10\/28\/report-biden-considers-paying-border-crossers-450k-each-in-reparations\/\">initial reports<\/a> in October that stated the Biden administration was considering the $450,000 payouts \u2014 an amount greater than the American victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/10\/29\/bidens-450k-reparations-for-border-crossers-exceeds-payments-to-9-11-victims-american-military-families\/\">have been given<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"6.7171717171717\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Angel Families: Biden Plan Is $450K for Illegal Aliens, $0 for American Victims<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yjzubPWtI7\">https:\/\/t.co\/yjzubPWtI7<\/a><br \/>via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartNews?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BreitbartNews<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JxhnBxnder?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JxhnBxnder<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Immigration Reform Law Institute (@IRLILaw) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IRLILaw\/status\/1458562613558845441?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 10, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/21\/poll-over-6-in-10-americans-oppose-bidens-450k-for-border-crossers\/\">63 percent<\/a> of Americans told CBS News\/YouGov pollsters that they are opposed to the payouts, including 64 percent of swing voters, and even 4-in-10 voters who supported Biden against Trump in the 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>Polls from Rasmussen Reports and the&nbsp;National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) have shown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/07\/poll-majority-oppose-bidens-450k-payouts-border-crossers\/\">similar results<\/a> where a majority of Americans, including likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/08\/poll-2-in-3-swing-voters-oppose-bidens-450k-payouts-to-border-crossers\/\">swing voters<\/a>, oppose the payouts.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, during a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/16\/bidens-dhs-chief-seemingly-defends-450k-payouts-to-border-crossers\/\">was forced<\/a> to seemingly defend the payouts to border crossers \u2014 portraying the issue as standard legal proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is an appropriate outcome of that litigation in response of the family separation policy, the cruel policy, is something I cannot opine on,\u201d Mayorkas said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Angel Families \u2014 those who have lost loved ones as a result of illegal immigration \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/05\/angel-families-biden-plan-450k-illegal-aliens-0-american-victims\/\">have slammed<\/a> the payouts as \u201ca plan to create millionaires out of over 5,000 illegal alien families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of these illegal aliens deserve anything more than a removal back to their country of origin,\u201d Angel Families with Advocates for Victims of Illegal Alien Crime (AVIAC) wrote in a statement. \u201c\u2026&nbsp;what does the government owe the families who have been victimized by illegal aliens, often forever?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>John Binder is a reporter for Breitbart News.
