It will be given on a long-term loan to the New York Historical Society. The removal process took several hours.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the city\u2019s public design commission unanimously voted to remove the statue after concerns about Jefferson and his relationship to slavery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis Administration owes it to the more than five million New Yorkers of color our members \u2013 past, present and future \u2013 represent, to resolve that the individuals memorialized within the confines of our People\u2019s House be reflective not only of the best traditions of our city\u2019s history and its diversity but unquestionable character,\u201d the city\u2019s council\u2019s Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/incredibly-racist-new-york-city-commission-votes-to-remove-200-year-old-thomas-jefferson-statue\">said<\/a> in a statement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Erin Thompson, author of the forthcoming \u201cSmashing Statues: The Rise and Fall of America\u2019s Public Monuments\u201d said that public input should go along with monument removal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemoving a monument without a public conversation about why it\u2019s happening is useless. New Yorkers all need to talk about who we want to honor and why,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, added, \u201cMoving this statue doesn\u2019t mean New Yorkers will forget who Thomas Jefferson was \u2014 but some of them might learn from the controversy that the man who wrote \u2018all men are created equal\u2019 owned over 600 of his fellow humans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Staten Island City Council Member Joe Borelli said that Mayor Bill de Blasio was waging a \u201cprogressive war on history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe de Blasio administration will continue the progressive war on history as he, himself, fades away into a portrait on a City Hall wall,\u201d he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/10\/13\/de-blasio-booting-founding-father-jefferson-from-city-hall\/\">told <\/a>the New York Post.<\/p>\n<p>The commission that decided to remove the statue is not elected, but instead appointed by the city\u2019s mayor. A spokesperson for Mayor de Blasio said at the time that he hoped to \u201cprovide valuable historical context\u201d to the statue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original bronze statue, by sculptor Pierre-Jean David, is still on display in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, DC. The plaster replica was gifted to City Hall by naval officer and Jefferson admirer Uriah Phillips Levy in 1834,\u201d the New York Post reported.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Levy, a Jewish naval commodore once called Jefferson \u201cone of the greatest men in history\u201d and \u201can inspiration to millions of Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leading the efforts to remove Jefferson was Democrat Corey Johnson, New York City Council Speaker.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are disturbing images of divisiveness and racism in our City that need to be revisited immediately,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/history\/2021\/11\/23\/thomas-jefferson-statue-removed-nyc-slaveowner\/\">said<\/a> in a letter to Mayor de Blasio. \u201cThat starts with City Hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jefferson had a storied <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/american-founders\/report\/thomas-jefferson-americas-philosopher-statesman\">career <\/a>in American politics serving as governor of Virginia, a delegate to the Second Continental Congress, secretary of state for George Washington, vice president, the third U.S. president, and founder of the University of Virginia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A statue of President Theodore Roosevelt is also being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/problematic-theodore-roosevelt-statue-to-be-removed-from-nycs-museum-of-natural-history\">moved<\/a> after 80 years from its place in front of New York City\u2019s American Museum of Natural History.
