In an interview published on Monday, Juan Carlos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/cuban-migrant-makes-it-to-polish-border-via-moscow-and-minsk\/9f06d1db-9f32-4519-8ebf-7c7571a75686\">told<\/a> SBS he was one of seven Cubans attempting to escape communism into Europe after making it to Europe\u2019s last dictatorship.<\/p>\n<p>The communist regime of Belarus, run by dictator Alexander Lukashenko, opened its border with neighboring Poland this month, an attempt to overwhelm the European Union\u2019s immigration system and considered by some observers an act of war against its democratic neighbors. Most migrants on the border are believed to be from the Middle East or South Asia. The Cuban refugee identified as Juan Carlos told SBS that he made it to Belarus through visa-free travel with Cuba\u2019s longtime ally Russia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Cuba, like Belarus, is a longstanding communist regime that systematically oppresses its people. Like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/belarus-sees-a-year-of-fierce-repression-after-disputed-vote\/\">Belarus<\/a>, it has experienced growing waves of anti-communist peaceful protest and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/08\/02\/cuba-human-rights-activists-confirm-1000-arrests-disappearances-since-july-11\/\">responded<\/a> to them with excessive state violence and mass imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the administration of President Barack Obama, the United States welcomed Cuban refugees who touched land in the country through a policy known as \u201cwet foot, dry foot.\u201d Obama rescinded the policy \u2013 a boon for human traffickers in Central America and Mexico, where a surge of Cuban refugee migration into the U.S. Southern Border has occurred.<\/p>\n<p>In broken English, Juan Carlos told SBS that he had initially arrived in Moscow via visa-free travel.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIn Moscow, I [receive] information [to go to] Belarus and then go to,\u201d Juan Carlos explained, pointing at the Polish border. He noted that Poland had not let him through after two attempts, and suggested he would try again. He also suggested he may return to Moscow, but that Russian officials arrested Cubans seeking to escape communism.<\/p>\n<p>His ultimate goal, the refugee said, was to arrive in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Juan Carlos said he was one of seven Cubans trapped in the chaos on the Polish border.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"5.4973821989529\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Among the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/refugees?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#refugees<\/a> at the Belarusian-Polish border, seven are Cuban citizens<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/cuba?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#cuba<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Belarus?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Belarus<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Poland?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Poland<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BelarusBorder?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BelarusBorder<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mDBHkBxRZ5\">pic.twitter.com\/mDBHkBxRZ5<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Amine Derghami (@Derghamia) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Derghamia\/status\/1463055870154137600?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 23, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Last week, NPR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/transcripts\/1056207428\">caught up<\/a> with two other Cubans in Belarus, who explained that they, too, had traveled from Havana to Moscow.&nbsp;Doniel Machado Pujol told NPR that he and his fellow refugees had endured ten days without food or water in the frigid Belarusian forest and had survived by drinking river water.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re people, not animals,\u201d a desperate Machado implored.<\/p>\n<p>Humanitarian aid worker&nbsp;Kalina Czwarnog told NPR that Belarus had been \u201cinviting\u201d refugees to the country with promises of entry to the European Union.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSome of them are Iraqi. Some of them are Kurds. There are people from Yemen, from Syria. There are people from African countries, like Nigeria, Cameroon,\u201d&nbsp;Czwarnog explained.<\/p>\n<p>Belarus unilaterally opened its border with Poland this month, sending a rush of refugees towards Poland and triggering violecne and chaos. Some migrants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/11\/14\/migrants-attack-polish-police-officers-with-stones-on-eu-frontier-with-belarus\/\">used<\/a> rocks and other rudimentary weapons to attack Polish police, prompting the use of water cannons to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/11\/16\/watch-water-cannon-deployed-as-stone-hurling-migrants-rush-polish-border-officers-injured\/\">subdue<\/a> the mob.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.638522427441\">\n<p lang=\"pl\" dir=\"ltr\">Od rana na przej\u015bciu granicznym w Ku\u017anicy po str. bia\u0142oruskiej gromadz\u0105 si\u0119 nielegalni imigranci. At this very moment, a hybrid war is taking place on the Polish-Belarusian border which Alexander Lukashenko, with the backroom support of Vladimir Putin, has declared against the entire European Union,\u201d Polish&nbsp;Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/11\/22\/belarus-migration-hybrid-war-is-greatest-attempt-to-destabilise-europe-since-cold-war-says-polish-pm\/\">said<\/a> in a video statement on Sunday.&nbsp;\u201cFrom a distance, these events may look like an ordinary migration crisis, but they are not. This is a political crisis created for a special purpose. The objective is to destabilise the situation in Europe first time since the end of the Cold War, 30 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The situation parallels the Mariel Boatlift of 1980, in which Cuban communist dictator Fidel Castro <a href=\"https:\/\/immigrationhistory.org\/item\/mariel-boatlift\/\">emptied<\/a> the prisons of the island \u2013 including a prodigious number of political prisoners \u2013 and sent 125,000 people into the United States. While a significant percentage of the people freed into America were not prisoners, Castro <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cuba.cu\/gobierno\/discursos\/1980\/esp\/f010580e.html\">insisted<\/a> in his publicity campaign for the move that they were all useless \u201c<em>lumpen\u201d<\/em> proletariat and joked that the Cuban refugees coming from America to help those he cast to the sea were doing Cuba an \u201coptimum sanitary service\u201d by cleaning up the \u201cscum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lukashenko, in an interview with BBC this weekend, was only slightly less obnoxious about the Polish border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur guys are helping the migrants get into Polish territory? It\u2019s perfectly possible, I think that\u2019s absolutely possible. Maybe someone helped them. I won\u2019t even look into this,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/11\/20\/lukashenko-absolutely-possible-belarus-forces-undermining-eu-border-i-wont-even-look-into-this\/\">shrugged<\/a>.<br \/>Lukashenko attributed the chaos on the border to the Slavic identity of Belarusians: \u201cWe\u2019re Slavs. We have hearts. (ANDREI POKUMEIKO\/BELTA\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI told the EU I\u2019m not going to detain migrants on the border, hold them at the border, and if they keep coming from now on I still won\u2019t stop them, because they\u2019re not coming to my country, they\u2019re going to yours,\u201d he promised.<br \/>Cubans have been forced to find alternate routes to freedom since President Obama issued a pro-regime policy towards Cuba in 2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2017\/03\/21\/cubans-still-fleeing-high-seas-months-obama-nixes-wet-footdry-foot\/\">ended<\/a> \u201cwet foot\/dry foot\u201d in 2017. Cuban refugees at the time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2017\/01\/13\/cubans-say-obama-shut-migration-path-in-revenge-for-trumps-win\/\">asserted<\/a> that, while attempting to appear welcoming to migrants, Obama had implemented harsh measures against Cubans as revenge for widespread Cuban-American support for former President Donald Trump. \u201cWet foot\/dry foot\u201d was longstanding law since 1966.<\/p>\n<p>Under President Joe Biden, the United States has reinstated austere expulsion measures against Cuban refugees. In the aftermath of the national protests on July 11, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) \u2013 notoriously doing little to stop human trafficking on the southern border \u2013 issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/immigration\/2021\/07\/16\/u-s-boaters-helping-cubans-face-prison-few-penalties-border-crossers\/\">threat<\/a> to any American citizen considering helping Cubans adrift on the high seas attempting to reach America.<\/p>\n<p>DHS has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/08\/11\/what-southern-border-coast-guard-deports-another-29-cubans-rafts\/\">boasted<\/a> of several mass deportations of Cubans at sea while migrant caravans \u2013 now featuring large numbers of Cubans thanks to Obama\u2019s policy \u2013 continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/ken-paxton-migrant-caravan-we-arent-able-to-keep-track-of-them\">congregate<\/a> on the land border.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Australian network SBS found a Cuban refugee among the throngs of thousands of migrants on the border between Belarus and Poland.
