Louie Gohmert announced late Monday that he would run for state attorney general in a bid to unseat GOP incumbent Ken Paxton.<\/p>\n<p>In his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Lqfmgb-zjyI\">announcement video<\/a>, Gohmert said that he had raised $1 million and that his candidacy would be centered around \u201celection integrity.\u201d He took subtle shots at Paxton, implicitly accusing him of slacking on the job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThough our current AG has had two terms, it seems he really started working harder after so many of his most honorable and very top people in the AG\u2019s office left, complaining of criminal conduct,\u201d Gohmert said, referring to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/10\/05\/texas-attorney-general-paxton-bribery-abuse-power\/\">bribery allegations<\/a> against Paxton. \u201cIf you allow me, I will not wait to be my busiest until after there\u2019s some some bad press about legal improprieties, I will start boldly protecting your rights on day one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gohmert added that the southern border, voting laws, \u201cunconstitutional mandates\u201d and \u201cparental consent\u201d would also be front-and-center issues.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7140050\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"32\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7140050\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. (Gabriel Aponte\/Getty Images for Concordia Summit)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Gohmert is not guaranteed to win the Republican nomination, though, because former President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/26\/trump-endorse-ken-paxton-george-bush-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">endorsed<\/a> Paxton this summer despite the criminal allegations, and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/02\/george-p-bush-texas-attorney-general-ken-paxton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George P. Bush<\/a>, the nephew of former President George W. He joined a lawsuit urging then-Vice President Mike Pence to challenge President Joe Biden\u2019s 2020 victory, and he has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2021\/07\/11\/cpac-rep-louie-gohmert-blames-jan-6-riot-on-democrats-and-a-government-conspiracy\/\">falsely suggested<\/a>&nbsp;that the Jan. 6 Capitol riot may have been a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/01\/14\/is-antifa-responsible-capitol-riot-donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">setup<\/a> on behalf of Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
